Mexico vs England Prediction - World Cup Round of 16
03/07/2026|SB Staff|World Cup 2026 Tips & Predictions
Mexico and England will face each other in the Round of 16 for a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament, with the co-hosts playing at home at the Estadio Azteca on Monday, July 6, at 10:00 AEST.
Mexico have been impressive when playing at home, beating Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32 to secure their place.
England, meanwhile, had to get themselves out of trouble in the second half against DR Congo, winning 2-1 after going a goal down.
To celebrate the momentous occasion that is the World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!
How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.
For example, if you’ve bet on Kylian Mbappe to score during one of France’s matches and during that match he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Jean-Philippe Mateta who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Mbappe is paid as a winner!
Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.
Quick Picks
Our pick: England to win
Value bet: Over 2.5 Goals
Long shot: England to win 2-1
Mexico vs England prediction
The moneyline odds have England as the pre-match favourites in this upcoming clash, although that might mean there is value in Mexico as potential underdogs in their own back garden.
As our Mexico vs England betting odds page shows, the market leans towards England, but the underdog price could hold appeal.
Javier Aguirre’s side have played three of their four games in Mexico City so far, winning each of them without conceding a goal. El Tri have been exceptional throughout, as they have a 100% record and have yet to concede a goal.
However, what may favour them when playing at this stadium is that they are playing at high altitude; something many of England’s team won’t be used to.
Add in that the Three Lions have been far from their best and have needed the second half in most of their games to get things going and win, and Thomas Tuchel’s side could be in big trouble.
Still, we think England have enough quality in their squad to get the job done. Quality-wise, Croatia is arguably the most talented nation that England has faced so far, and they stepped up with a big performance in that one.
Against the “lesser” nations, they’ve found it tough.
Our prediction is likely to be an England win.

Mexico vs England score prediction
Despite Mexico being yet to concede a goal, we think this is a game in which their sturdy defence will finally be broken.
While Harry Kane is the talisman, England do have the potential for goals throughout the squad. Given the conditions likely to be faced in Mexico City; the high altitude and hostility could make the early stages uncomfortable.
But should they weather an expected early storm, Kane, Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon and others could turn the screw.
We think the ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ market has a good chance of hitting, as we think the BTTS also has a good chance of hitting.
With it being knockout soccer, we think both teams could look to go for a win, especially if the tie is levelled at some point.
We think Mexico scoring first offers value as England had to come from behind against DR Congo, and the conditions will suit the hosts.
They’ll likely be on the front foot from the beginning, putting immense pressure on Tuchel’s side.
We think there’s value in England winning 2-1 as a correct score.
Since this is a knockout clash between two unknown qualifiers, it's worth brushing up on how to bet on the World Cup and getting your head around what a multi bet actually is before you lock anything in for the semi-final stage.
Player markets to watch
Kane continues to be the main man for England, having netted a brace against DR Congo in the previous round to advance to the Round of 16.
Before that, he had three goals across his three Group Stage matches, including two against Croatia.
This would suggest that he has value in the ‘to score 2+ goals’ market, as the forward often comes up big in some of the games that have the most pressure around them.
For Mexico, Raul Jimenez has good value as an anytime goalscorer.
He is one of Mexico’s leading men and will know England’s defence extremely well after spending several years in the Premier League and playing against many of them. He has two goals in three games, and could have had a first-half hat-trick in Mexico City against Ecuador.
The other scorer in that tie was Julian Quinones, who also has value to net anytime. He has been impressive in the tournament so far.
His value is perhaps in the ‘To Score or Assist’, as he has three goals and one assist in four games.
