Australia vs Egypt Prediction – World Cup Round of 32
29/06/2026|Robbie Kruse|World Cup 2026 Tips & Predictions
Australia’s World Cup adventure rolls on, after Tony Popovic’s finished second in an ultra-competitive Group D against all the odds.
Installed as the favourites to finish last out of USA, Türkiye and Paraguay, our Aussies did what they do best and proved everyone wrong.
They will now aim to continue to silence their detractors by winning a World Cup knockout match for the first time ever.
Standing between Australia and their latest slice of footballing history is an in-form Egyptian side.
Egypt arrive unbeaten so far at this World Cup, with two draws and a win, and unbeaten in their last five overall.
Australia have shown their usual grit throughout this tournament, but for the first time in a long time, have mixed it with some unconventional flair thanks to the likes of Nestory Irankunda, Cristian Volpato and buccaneering left-back Jordy Bos.
Speaking of flair, Egypt’s main firework Mohamed Salah is currently in doubt for this clash with a muscle strain.
However, if he fails to recover in time, the Pharaohs still have plenty of firepower in the form of Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush.
Will Salah play? Can Egypt win without him? How does this affect Australia’s preparations, and will Tony Popovich set out to attack this game from the outset or try and drag it to the unpredictable waters of a penalty shootout?
With so many questions, how about we go looking for some answers? Before we do though, to celebrate the momentous occasion that is the World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!
How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.
For example, if you’ve bet on Nestory Irankunda to score during this game and he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Tete Yengi who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Irankunda is paid as a winner!
Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.
Now back to the action! For the latest betting tips and analysis ahead of this Round of 32 World Cup match, check out our Australia vs Egypt tips and predictions below.
Australia vs Egypt Predictions
Head-to-Head Prediction
While Australia once again find themselves as the outsiders in the H2H market at this World Cup, of all the game’s they’ve played so far at 3.40 (at the time of writing), this is the shortest they’ve been yet.
Egypt sit at 2.55 for the win, and yeah, there is some solid reasoning behind that figure. Hossam Hassan's side carry more individual quality in the final third, with Salah's movement and Marmoush's pace, however if Salah is officially ruled out in the coming days, expect Egypt’s price to balloon significantly.
If the Pharaohs are missing their pharaoh, this game is there for the taking for Australia. Egypt might choose to risk Salah and play him one legged due to the do-or-die nature of this clash, but if he’s anything other than fully fit, the inform defensive duo of Souttar and Circati will more than fancy their chances of containing him.
The biggest problem for the Green and Gold does not lie at the back, however. It’s going forward which is proving the issue for Popovich’s chargers, who have fired a blank in their last two outings.
We’re at the stage of the tournament where goalless draws will no longer do, unless of course you want to win every game on penalties.
While no team wants to play 120 minutes of football again and again, a one-off marathon match is sometimes called for.
Australia have never been involved in a penalty shootout or won a knockout match at a World Cup before. We are tipping both of those things to change here.
Betting tip: Draw (Australia to win on penalties).
Correct Score Prediction
The Correct Score market points firmly toward a tight, low-scoring affair, with a 1-1 draw in regular time the shortest of all the options at 5.50.
Under 2.5 goals is heavily favoured at $1.42, reinforcing that this should be a cagey knockout encounter.
Australia will look to sit deep, frustrate Egypt's creators and rely on set pieces or counterattacks through Nestory Irankunda and Jordy Bos to get on the scoresheet.
On the flipside, one moment of Salah sorcery (should he play) or Marmoush magic, could undo the Aussie blockade. Get ready for a long morning, we see this one going well beyond 90 minutes.
Betting tip: 1-1 after extra time.
First Goal Prediction
It’s not everyday you back a defender for first goal scorer, but anyone who has watched Jordy Bos at this World Cup won’t be surprised with our selection.
A wolf in sheep’s clothing, Bos is an out and out attacker who just happens to be really good at defending. His marauding runs down the left and his ability to cut in to cross and shoot are wildly reminiscent of one Gareth Bale.
Bale famously started his career as a left-back before transitioning into a fully fledged forward down the track and we can see Bos copying this trajectory.
Australia’s No.5 was inches away from scoring a late winner against Paraguay after snaking between two defenders and unleashing a low curling shot that just breezed past the post.
In our opinion it’s only a matter of time before one of these attempts nestles in the far corner, so why not in this game? Jordy, over to you.
Betting tip: Jordy Bos.
