Most Appearances for Australia at the World Cup

02/06/2026|SB Staff|Australia

Playing for Australia at the World Cup is what every football player from Down Under dreams of doing one day.

An honour that only comes around every four years, if qualification is secured, there’s no denying, representing your country at the World Cup is the pinnacle of the sport.

For a number of proud Aussies, they got to experience the pinnacle more than the rest, turning out for Australia across multiple World Cups.

Some players on this list look set to add to their tally and pull clear of their peers at the upcoming 2026 World Cup, but for now, here are the 10 players who have the most appearances for Australia at the World Cup.

Top 10 Most Appearances for Australia at the World Cup

10. Aaron Mooy – 7 Appearances

Midfielder | Two World Cups

Aaron Mooy is arguably one of the most technically accomplished midfielders Australia has produced in the modern era, and his seven World Cup appearances do not fully capture how influential he was.

He played all three group games in Russia 2018 before returning for Qatar 2022, where he was outstanding across all four matches, including a composed display in the round-of-16 loss to Argentina.

Mooy's ability to control tempo, pick passes, and operate under pressure made him the creative fulcrum of the Socceroos. His performances in Qatar, particularly in helping dismantle Tunisia and Denmark, drew widespread praise from fans and pundits alike.

9. Mile Jedinak – 7 Appearances

Midfielder | Three World Cups

Mile Jedinak captained Australia through some of their toughest World Cup moments, leading by example in three tournaments.

He made a single appearance in South Africa 2010, then featured in three group games each in 2014 and 2018, neither campaign yielding a round-of-16 place.

As captain, Jedinak was the heartbeat of the side, a combative, no-nonsense midfielder who could also deliver from set pieces.

He scored a hat-trick of penalties during qualifying for Russia 2018, underlining his importance beyond just his physical presence. His leadership gave the squad belief, even in the most difficult circumstances.

8. Jackson Irvine – 7 Appearances*

Midfielder | Two World Cups

Jackson Irvine has become one of the Socceroos' most consistent performers over the past decade, and his seven World Cup appearances (and counting) reflect his importance to the squad.

He played in all three group games at Russia 2018 as Australia bowed out without progressing, before returning for Qatar 2022 where he featured in all four matches, including the thrilling round-of-16 tie against Argentina.

Known for his box-to-box energy, aerial threat, and ability to chip in with goals from midfield, Irvine has continued to develop with each international tournament and remains a central figure in Australian football.

7. Jason Culina – 7 Appearances

Midfielder | Two World Cups

The original Jackson Irvine, Jason Culina played a key role in the engine room of Australia's midfield during two World Cup campaigns.

He featured in all four matches in Germany 2006, including that tense round-of-16 defeat to Italy, and brought energy and physicality to a squad that surprised many with its organisation and fight.

He returned for all three group-stage games in South Africa 2010, helping Australia compete despite ultimately being eliminated.

6. Scott Chipperfield – 7 Appearances

Full-back | Two World Cups

Scott Chipperfield was a key figure in Australia's golden generation of the mid-2000s and played a full part in their finest World Cup to date.

He appeared in all four games at Germany 2006, including the round-of-16 match against Italy, where Australia were controversially eliminated by a late penalty.

He then returned for all three group-stage matches at South Africa 2010, bringing experience and discipline to the back line.

Comfortable on either flank and known for his intelligent positioning, Chipperfield spent much of his club career in Switzerland but was consistently reliable in an Australian shirt on the world stage.

5. Aziz Behich – 7 Appearances*

Full-back | Two World Cups

Aziz Behich made his World Cup debut in Russia 2018, featuring in all three of Australia's group matches as they exited at the first hurdle.

He returned four years later for Qatar 2022 and was even more impactful, playing in all four matches, including the round-of-16 defeat to Argentina, where he nearly scored a late equaliser after a mazy run.

His performances in Qatar caught the eye, particularly his determined displays down the left flank against some of the world's best attackers.

Behich is combative, energetic, and composed under pressure, a reliable presence who grew with each tournament and earned his place among Australia's most-capped World Cup players.

4. Mark Bresciano – 9 Appearances

Midfielder | Three World Cups

Mark Bresciano was one of the most technically gifted Australian midfielders of his generation, and his nine World Cup appearances across three tournaments reflect just how integral he was.

He played all four games in the historic 2006 campaign in Germany, when Australia reached the round of 16 for the first time.

He returned for two matches at South Africa 2010 and then came out of international retirement to feature three times more in Brazil 2014, by which point he was one of the most experienced players in the squad.

Elegant in possession and capable of the spectacular, Bresciano embodied the technical side of Australian football at its best.

3. Tim Cahill – 9 Appearances

Attacking Midfielder/Forward | Four World Cups

No player in Australian football history has attended more World Cups than Tim Cahill (four in total) and his nine appearances include some of the most memorable moments the Australia have ever produced.

In 2006, he scored twice against Japan in one of Australia's greatest wins, with his first goal being Australia’s first ever goal at a World Cup.

He returned for two games each in 2010 and 2014, the latter including a stunning volley against the Netherlands that is still talked about today.

His final appearance came as a substitute in 2018. Cahill brought intensity, aerial ability, and an almost supernatural timing in front of goal to every tournament he attended. To this day Cahill remains Australia’s all-time leading scorer in total and at the World Cup.

2. Mathew Ryan – 10 Appearances*

Goalkeeper | Three World Cups

Joint-holder of the all-time record, Mathew Ryan has been Australia's first-choice goalkeeper across three consecutive World Cups.

He made three appearances in Brazil 2014 and three in Russia 2018, both tournaments ending at the group stage. In Qatar 2022, Ryan was central to one of Australian football's finest hours — featuring in all four matches, including the famous round-of-16 clash with Argentina.

He consistently keeps Australia competitive against stronger opposition through sharp reflexes and commanding presence and looks all but guaranteed to add at least three more appearances to his tally at the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

1. Mathew Leckie – 10 Appearances*

Winger/Forward | Three World Cups

Mathew Leckie is the definition of a big-game player, and his World Cup record backs that up.

He appeared in all three of Australia's group-stage matches in 2014 and 2018, though neither campaign produced progression beyond the group.

It was in Qatar 2022 that Leckie truly cemented his legacy, not just for accumulating his tenth appearance, but for scoring the iconic solo goal against Denmark that sent Australia into the round of 16.

That moment, in front of a global audience, captured everything about Leckie: relentless, direct, and capable of brilliance when it matters most.

A late and shock inclusion in Tony Popovic's final 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup, despite struggling with injury over the last few years, could we see one or two more iconic Mathew Leckie appearances later this month? Watch this space.
