Jackson Irvine Bio
Jackson Irvine is one of Australia's most distinguished footballers of the modern era; a technically gifted, physically imposing central midfielder who combines vision, leadership and a competitive drive to rival anyone.
Born on 7 March 1993 in Melbourne, Irvine attended The Knox School and played his junior football through the Victorian League structure before signing with Celtic in December 2010 following a successful trial.
His father was born in Aberdeen, giving Irvine dual Scottish and Australian eligibility; after representing Scotland at under-19 level, he committed to the Australian men's soccer team and never looked back.
Now the captain of both FC St. Pauli and his country, Irvine, heads into the North America World Cup as one of the most experienced and respected leaders in our national setup.

Jackson Irvine Club Career
Irvine came through the Victorian League structure in Melbourne before joining the Melbourne Victory academy as a teenager, which led to a trial at Celtic in 2010.
He signed with Scottish Premiership heavyweights Celtic FC in December of that year and spent two seasons developing at youth level, captaining the Celtic under-19 side to the Scottish Youth Cup and Under-19 League double in 2011-12 before making his Scottish Premier League debut in September 2012.
Loan spells followed at Kilmarnock and Ross County, where he developed into a reliable and combative Scottish Premiership performer, before Ross County signed him permanently in July 2015.
A year later, Burton Albion broke their transfer record to bring him to the English Championship, and Irvine repaid their faith immediately; scoring 10 goals in 43 games in his debut 2016-17 season and being named the club's Player of the Year.
He signed a three-year deal with Hull City in August 2017 before a brief stint with Hibernian in early 2021.
In July 2021, Irvine joined FC St. Pauli in the German 2. Bundesliga on a free transfer; the move that would define his career. He became co-captain in 2022-23, then sole captain from 2023 after Leart Paqarada departed, and extended his contract in August 2024 ahead of St. Pauli's return to the Bundesliga for the first time in 13 years.
A cult figure at the Hamburg club, Irvine has flourished as captain, combining his physical presence with excellent technical ability, vision and an astute reading of the game.
Jackson Irvine International Career
Irvine represented Scotland at under-19 level but committed to the Australian men's soccer team, making his senior debut as a substitute in a 3-0 win over Canada on 15 October 2013.
He represented Australia at the 2013 U-20 World Cup in Turkey before establishing himself as a senior regular across the following decade.
He featured at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and was named in the starting lineup for the opening match of the 2022 World Cup against France in Qatar, going on to captain the side across all four matches as Australia beat Denmark and Tunisia to reach the round of 16; his leadership throughout that tournament elevated his standing both domestically and internationally.
Three months after the tournament, on 28 March 2023, he was named the 63rd captain of the Australian men's soccer team.
At the 2023 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar, Irvine scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Syria that sent Australia into the knockout rounds.
He continued to deliver in World Cup qualification, scoring twice against Indonesia in a 5-1 win in March 2025 and once against China in a 2-0 victory days later.
The road to the 2026 tournament was not straightforward. A stress reaction in his foot required surgery and caused him to miss the decisive qualification wins over Japan and Saudi Arabia.
Staying true to his character, Irvine fought back and returned ahead of schedule to make himself available for selection. With 80 caps and 14 international goals, his combination of leadership, quality and tactical intelligence makes him central to Australia's hopes of making it deep into the World Cup.
Australia open their Group D campaign against Turkiye on 14 June in Vancouver, before facing the United States in Seattle and Paraguay on 26 June in Santa Clara.
