What is a Multi Bet?

04/04/2025|SB Staff|Betting Guides & Terminology

You’ve heard your mates talk about them and now you want in on the action, but you’re still a little unsure as to what exactly a Multi bet is. Well, do we have a guide for you!

What is a Multi Bet?

A Multi, sometimes referred to as a Parlay or an Accumulator is as the name suggests, multiple bets contained within a single wager.

In order for a Multi to come in, all of the legs within the wager must be successful.

There are exceptions of course, with most bookmakers offering a “Cash Out” feature, allowing you to accept a partial payout of the overall return of the Multi before all legs have been completed.

How Does a Multi Work?

Even though, in the hands of the right punter, they can sometimes produce a bet slip as long as War and Peace, the mechanics of a Multi-bet or Multi are actually incredibly easy to understand.

Every time a leg is successful, the winnings from that leg are automatically reinvested into the next leg of the Multi. Obviously, the more legs you add, the greater the risk, but as always, the greater the reward.

Luckily you don't need to be a scientist to work out the value of your multi. Sportsbet has a built in Multi Bet Calculator to demystify the process. Legs of a Multi are worked out in chronological order, not in the order they were placed. Therefore, if the third leg on your bet slip is the first to result, this will be considered as the first leg of your Multi.

An example of a 3-leg Multi would be as follows:

Oklahoma City Thunder to win at 4.45

Manchester United to win at 1.66

New York Yankees to win at 1.80

These three single bets combined into a Multi yield accumulated odds of 13.34. Therefore a $10 wager would equal a return of $133.44.

These accumulated odds result in a significantly larger dividend as opposed to individually placing a $10 stake on each outcome.

An individual $10 bet on the above bets would return the following

Oklahoma City Thunder to win at 4.45 = $45.50

Manchester United to win at 1.66 = $16.60

New York Yankees to win at 1.80 = $18

The individual bets would equal an amount $80.10 total, significantly smaller than the $133.44 return you would receive from a Multi with the exact same teams, exact same odds and the exact same stake.

You don’t have to stop at three legs, but you do have to stop at 20, with that being the maximum number of legs you can place within a single Multi.

Types of Multi Bets

Multis can be placed across multiple games, multiple sports and now multiple outcomes within the same game, the latter being referred to as a Same Game Multi.

What is a Same Game Multi

You may be asking what is a same game multi? With a Same Game Multi you select a market, for this example let’s use the English Premier League, and choose a game.

Say the game is between Chelsea and Arsenal, in a Same Game Multi you can bet on

Arsenal to win at 2.70

The Correct Score to be 2-0 Arsenal at 15.00

Gabriel Martinelli to score anytime at 9.25

This equates to accumulated odds of 53.50, with a modest $10 stake paying $530.50.

What is a Same Race Multi?

A same race multi is, you guessed it, a multi with all legs coming from the same race. This is calculated and set up the same as any same game multi. Although there is race in the name this style of multi specifically refers to Thoroughbred and Greyhound races and not motorised or human races.

What Happens if a Bet is Void in a Multi?

If a bet or leg in your multi is void then it will be removed from the multi. The multi will be recalculated with the value moving on to the next leg.

How to Place a Multi Bet

These days placing a Multi has never been easier. With Sportsbet’s Multi Builder you can choose from across the multitude of sports and markets on offer and easily combine multiple bets in one convenient place.

Now that you’re up to speed with exactly what a Multi is, it’s time to start building your own!

Conveniently located on both the Sportsbet website and app, the Multi Builder feature allows you to easily navigate multiple markets and odds in one central location.

There is a builder for sport and a builder for racing so no punter is left out. The navigation panel at the top of the Multi Builder page enables you to bounce easily between sports as well including an “Upcoming” tab, which displays all sports that are about to kick-off.

In just a couple of clicks you can back the Gold Coast Suns to upset the Brisbane Lions, the Nuggets to take care of the Jazz and the Astros to hit more homeruns than the Phillies.

Throughout the entire process Sportsbet’s multi calculator will be calculating the multi and displaying all data you may need to know.

After you’ve finished compiling your picks, you simply review all your selections, choose your stake and confirm your bet and congratulations you’ve built your Multi.

Whether you want to place a humble 3-leg wager or try to land the fabled spider (8-legs) and beyond, there’s something for every punter in the world of Multis.
