Paolini vs Golubic

Jasmine Paolini will be aiming to have an easier time on the iconic grass courts of Wimbledon when she faces Viktorija Golubic in the second round on Thursday (match time to be decided).

The Italian was almost left red-faced in her first-round clash against American Robin Montgomery, losing the first set 6-0 before rallying back to ensure she didn’t suffer an early exit.

Golubic will be aiming to make it just as tough in the British heat, with the Swiss defeating Iryna Shymanovich 2-1 after winning the first and third sets.

Quick Picks

Our pick: Paolini to win

Value bet:Over 21.5 Games

Long shot:Viktorija Golubic (+2.5) - Game Handicap

Betting Preview

The odds in the moneyline aren’t as wide as they may have first been, but Paolini has been made the pre-match favourite.

Her #17 WTA ranking will likely have played a role in her odds being shorter, given that Golubic is ranked #62 on the tour. However, it’s worth noting that the Swiss has the better head-to-head, leading 3-1.

The last time these two players met on court was in 2022, when Paolini recorded her first win against Golubic, on clay in Warsaw, with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Paolini can be very hot-and-cold when it comes to facing players in the top #100. Her record is scattered, which makes this encounter look rather interesting from a betting angle. Against top #100 players in the last 52 weeks, Paolini holds a 22-19 record (53.7%).

Throughout her career, she has competed against top #100 287 times, winning 142 (49.5%).

It’s also worth noting that her WTA career on grass isn’t great. She is 12-11 (52.2%), and while it is still a winning record, it’s her worst across all three main surface types. She has never won a tournament on grass, either.

Golubic hasn’t had much joy against players inside the top #20 over the last 52 weeks. She is winless in the three meetings she has had, while she has won less than a quarter (23.3%) of matches faced against opponents ranked as high as the top #20 over her career.

She is 25-22 (53.2%) on grass in her WTA career, and is 4-2 (66.7%) over the last year.

Betting Markets to Watch

Paolini edges the moneyline market, but there’s potential value elsewhere worth exploring.

The Italian to win the first set has slightly better value, as she has won the first set in each of her last nine completed Grand Slam Second Round matches.

Alternatively, totals can offer better value to bettors.

The ‘ Over 21.5 Games ’ market has value, as each of Paolini's last five matches at Wimbledon have gone over the total match games line.

Our Prediction

We think Paolini will be the likely winner.

Our long shot is the ‘ Viktorija Golubic (+2.5) - Game Handicap ’ market, as Paolini has failed to cover the game handicap in each of her last six completed WTA main draw matches on grass against older opponents.
