Aussie Maya Joint Stuns Serena Williams in Wimbledon Comeback

Aussie Maya Joint Stuns Serena Williams in Wimbledon Comeback – Straight Sets News Summary:

- Australian young gun Maya Joint upset Serena Williams 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 in the American legend's first match back after nearly four years away.

- The Wimbledon centre court showdown marked Williams' long-awaited comeback as a 44-year-old mother-of-two.

- Joint now faces Filipino Alexandra Eala in the second round, with the Wimbledon draw opening up nicely for the ascending Aussie.

An Australian Upset for the Ages at SW19

Nobody outside Joint's camp gave the red-headed Aussie a hope. Facing Williams on the same centre court where the American had claimed seven of her 23 major titles, Joint was widely tipped as easy meat for the returning great.

Instead, the young Australian delivered a career-defining performance, flaying winners past a Williams making her first competitive appearance since retiring in defeat to Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic at the 2022 US Open.

"I really don't know what to say right now. I don't know what just happened," a disbelieving Joint said courtside. "I didn't get much sleep last night. I was up until like 2am just thinking about it."

How Maya Joint Broke the Serena Spell

Joint and coach Chris Mahony walked onto centre court with a clear game plan: refuse to be intimidated. It worked a treat.

Set one: Joint held her nerve through a tricky opener, breaking Williams when the American crashed a backhand into the net, before sealing the set 6-3 with a forehand winner.

Set two: The Aussie broke immediately but Williams roared back, saving four break points at five-all and clinching the tiebreak 8-6 courtesy of a 196km/h serve down the T.

Set three: Down an early break, Joint dug in, absorbed the Williams pressure, and reeled off the games needed to close out a stunning 6-3 decider.

"I knew she would have big serves, but I had to punch back, and show her that I'm not going to go away, and that I'm not scared of her, even though I was," Joint admitted with a laugh.

The End of an Era? Serena's Wimbledon Return Falls Short

Williams' return had been the most anticipated storyline of the fortnight. A minute-long standing ovation greeted her arrival, husband Alexis Ohanian cradled two-year-old Adira in the stands, and eight-year-old Olympia watched on as her mum went to battle.

The 44-year-old showed flashes of her old brilliance — the grunts, the serves, even a spirited argument with the chair umpire over a line call that Hawk-Eye promptly overturned. But four years away from the tour ultimately proved too much of a gap to bridge against an opponent 24 years her junior.

What's Next for Joint at Wimbledon

The win could hardly be better timed. Joint arrived at SW19 having endured a 10-match losing streak and just one victory in her previous 14 outings — a run heavily impacted by a lingering back injury that's now behind her.

She'll now meet Filipino Alexandra Eala in the second round, a rematch of last year's thrilling Eastbourne grass-court final which Joint won. With the draw opening up, the former top-30 teenager looks primed to relaunch her season in style at the All England Club.
