Switzerland vs Algeria Prediction - World Cup Round of 32

Switzerland vs Algeria

Switzerland and Algeria meet at BC Place in Vancouver in what shapes as one of the more intriguing Round of 32 clashes at the World Cup.

The Swiss topped Group B unbeaten, rattling in seven goals across three matches, while Algeria scraped through as one of the best third-placed sides from Group J. It’s knockout football now, and these two could serve up a belter.

Switzerland have looked the part. A controlled draw with Qatar was followed by a dominant 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, then a gritty 2-1 victory over hosts Canada at this very ground.

Young gun Johan Manzambi bagged three goals across the group stage (two off the bench against Bosnia and Herzegovina before earning a start against Canada and adding another) Ruben Vargas has found the net in consecutive outings, and the Granit Xhaka-Remo Freuler midfield axis has been running matches on their terms.

To celebrate the momentous occasion that is the World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!

How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.

For example, if you’ve bet on Kylian Mbappe to score during one of France’s matches and during that match he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Jean-Philippe Mateta who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Mbappe is paid as a winner!

Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.

Switzerland vs Algeria prediction

Switzerland to win and over 2.5 goals is our play for this one.

The Swiss are the more organised, more reliable outfit and they’ve already beaten Canada at this exact venue.

Murat Yakin’s 4-2-3-1 shape is built to suffocate teams through the middle, and Algeria’s creative types will struggle to find pockets of space against Xhaka and Freuler sitting in front of the back four. Switzerland have the structure for knockout football. Algeria don’t.

But this won’t be a shutout. Algeria scored in two of their three group matches and Mahrez is in the kind of form where he can produce something from nothing.

The Fennec Foxes have shown they’ll always have a crack, which is exactly why goals look likely. Switzerland shipped one against both Bosnia and Canada, and Algeria’s attack is a step above either of those sides when it’s firing.

Both sides showed attacking intent in the group stage, with Switzerland scoring seven and Algeria netting five across their three matches.

Algeria’s leaky defence against Switzerland’s clinical attack creates the perfect recipe for an open contest. Back Switzerland to get the job done, but expect Algeria to make some noise on the way out.

Player markets to watch

Our pick: Johan Manzambi to score anytime.

The 20-year-old has been Switzerland’s breakout star, bagging three group-stage goals - two off the bench against Bosnia and Herzegovina before starting and scoring against Canada.

He’s fearless in front of goal and thrives on the chaos that Algeria’s shaky defence will invite. Whether he starts or comes on as an impact sub, Manzambi has proven he only needs a sniff to find the net.

Our pick: Riyad Mahrez to score anytime.

Algeria’s captain has two goals in his last match alone and is carrying this team on his shoulders.

His ability to create something from absolutely nothing makes him the obvious Algerian threat, and Switzerland’s defence has conceded in all three of their group outings. Mahrez will get chances, and he’s converting them right now.

Our pick: Ruben Vargas to score anytime.

Vargas has found the net in consecutive World Cup matches against Bosnia and Canada, and he’s been one of Switzerland’s most dangerous attacking outlets.

His direct running and eye for goal make him a genuine threat against an Algerian backline that has shipped goals for fun this tournament.
