Spain vs Austria Prediction - World Cup Round of 32

Spain vs Austria

An all-European affair in the Round of 32 will see Spain take on Austria on Thursday, July 2, with kick-off at 10:00 AEST.

Spain made it through to the next stage of the competition after Luis de la Fuente’s side topped Group H with two wins and a draw.

Ralf Rangnick’s Austria, meanwhile, qualified after finishing second in Group J, having won a game, drawn a game, and lost a game.

The winner of this tie will face either Portugal vs Croatia in another all-European tie.

To celebrate the momentous occasion that is the World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!

How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.

For example, if you’ve bet on Kylian Mbappe to score during one of France’s matches and during that match he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Jean-Philippe Mateta who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Mbappe is paid as a winner!

Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.

Quick Picks

Our pick: Spain to win

Value bet: Under 2.5 Goals

Long shot: Mikel Oyarzabal to score anytime

Spain vs Austria prediction

Spain have been made the big pre-match favourites in the moneyline market ahead of this encounter, and as our Spain vs Austria betting odds page shows, the 2010 world champions and, more recently, 2024 European champions, have found some rhythm in their matches.

They started with a shock, though – a goalless draw against Cape Verde. Spain then won back-to-back games against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.

They won’t necessarily be at their best in the game against the South Americans, but De La Fuente’s side showed signs of why many believe they are among the favourites.

Austria should pose a challenge, although they showed some signs of struggle against nations around them or higher in the rankings.

They defeated Jordan without too much concern, as many had expected them to, but dropped points in a defeat to Argentina before drawing against Algeria with a last-minute leveller.

Given Spain have been resolute in their defending, it’s why we also think Spain are the most likely to win.

Spain's pedigree shows when you scan the players with the most trophies in football history, and for a feel of how this clash fits the bigger picture, the World Cup betting markets are worth a browse before you back anyone.

Spain vs Austria score prediction

We think there’s value in the ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ market for this one, particularly because La Roja haven’t been at their best in attack. Indeed, in each of their last seven World Cup knockout matches against European sides, Spain has scored one goal.

Austria can find the back of the net when given chances, but Spain’s defence is yet to concede a goal in this tournament.

Rangnick will also likely set his Austria team up to be defensive and look to attack on the counter, which De La Fuente’s side should be equal to. This is why we don’t think it’ll be a goal fest and why we think there’s value in the ‘Under’ for this market.

By extension, we don’t think the BTTS will hit, offering value in this market. Spain to win to Nil has value, with the Goal Range market of 1-2 having additional value worth exploring.

Our correct score prediction is for Spain to win 2-0.

If you fancy stringing Spain in with a few other results, here's what a multi bet is before you do, and it's worth a look at how the World Cup groups stack up to see how this pair landed where they did.

Spain vs Austria team news and line-ups

Predicted Spain line-up (4-3-3): Unai Simón, Pedro Porro, Pau Cubarsí, Aymeric Laporte, Marc Cucurella, Rodri, Pedri, Fabián Ruiz, Lamine Yamal, Mikel Oyarzabal, Mikel Merino.

Spain lean on patient build-up through their Barcelona-heavy spine before stretching the game with pace out wide and quick transitions. Nico Williams is expected to miss out with a recurring knock.

Predicted Austria line-up (4-2-3-1): Patrick Pentz, Stefan Posch, Kevin Danso, Philipp Lienhart, Phillipp Mwene, Nicolas Seiwald, Xaver Schlager, Patrick Wimmer, Marcel Sabitzer, Romano Schmid, Marko Arnautovic.

Austria rely on intensity through central midfield and a willingness to push forward, though their backline has looked stretchable when forced to chase a game.

Player markets to watch

Mikel Oyarzabal is the main threat for Spain, despite failing to find the target in two of the three Group Stage games. He did get a quick-fire brace against Saudi Arabia in the first half, and has registered a shot in each of the three games so far. This is why we think he has value to be an anytime goalscorer for La Roja.

And Oyarzabal’s stats in his last 15 games for Spain are pretty remarkable – the Real Sociedad hitman recording 15 goals and seven assists.

Against an Austria side who are on a run of 12 matches in this competition without keeping a clean sheet, this could also be the match in which Lamine Yamal sparks into life.

The Barcelona winger has one goal in his three matches so far and no assists. But we think he’ll get some time on the ball against Austria to make things happen, which is why we think value in the ‘To Score or Assist’ market.
