Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia

The final round of Group H action brings us a genuine knockout match when Cape Verde take on Saudi Arabia in Houston on Saturday morning (AEST).

One side goes through, the other goes home. It doesn't get much more straightforward than that.

Cape Verde have been the story of the tournament so far. The tiny island nation held Spain to a goalless draw in their opener before coming from behind to draw 2-2 with Uruguay.

They're unbeaten through two matches and need just a point to all but seal a spot in the Round of 32. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, are staring down the barrel after copping a 4-0 belting from Spain on matchday two.

They sit bottom of the group on one point with a goal difference of minus four and simply have to win to keep their World Cup dream alive.

That desperation from Saudi Arabia is what makes this match so fascinating from a punting perspective. They can't sit back. They can't play for a draw.

They have to go after it from the first whistle, and that plays right into the hands of a Cape Verde side that has shown they're at their most dangerous on the counter.

To celebrate the momentous occasion that is the World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!

How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.

For example, if you’ve bet on Kylian Mbappe to score during one of France’s matches and during that match he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Jean-Philippe Mateta who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Mbappe is paid as a winner!

Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.

Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia prediction

Cape Verde to win is our main play here, and we're backing both teams to score alongside it.

The Blue Sharks have proven across two matches that they belong at this level. Keeper Vozinha, the 40-year-old cult hero, pulled off seven saves against Spain and has become one of the faces of the tournament.

In front of him, coach Pedro Bubista has built a compact, disciplined outfit that concedes very little from open play. Going forward, Kevin Pina's set-piece delivery and Helio Varela's finishing give them genuine scoring threat.

Saudi Arabia's position forces them into an attacking approach, and that's where this gets dangerous for them.

The Green Falcons were torn apart by Spain when they pushed up, and their defensive record across the tournament reads five goals conceded in two matches. New coach Georgios Donis has won just one of his five matches in charge, a friendly against Puerto Rico, hardly inspiring confidence heading into a must-win match at a World Cup.

The both teams to score angle stacks up nicely as a second leg. Saudi Arabia will throw bodies forward because they have no choice.

Captain Salem Al Dawsari has the quality to create something, and desperation often produces at least one moment of magic. But every time they commit forward, they leave gaps at the back for Cape Verde's pace in transition.

Varela showed against Uruguay he can punish mistakes, and Saudi Arabia's defence has been making plenty of them.

The air-conditioned comfort of NRG Stadium removes any weather factor, so this one comes down to tactics and temperament. Cape Verde have both on their side.

If you're keen to back this one, it's worth getting your head around how a multi bet works before you lump these two into a same-game punt, and our World Cup betting markets rundown breaks down the rest of the options.

Player markets to watch

Our pick: Helio Varela to score anytime.

Varela grabbed the equaliser against Uruguay after pouncing on a defensive error, and he'll be licking his lips at the prospect of facing a Saudi Arabian backline that shipped four against Spain. With Saudi Arabia forced to push forward, the spaces in behind will be there for him to exploit.

Our pick: Kevin Pina to score anytime.

Pina opened the scoring against Uruguay with a cracking free kick and has established himself as Cape Verde's chief creative threat. Set pieces could be massive in this match, particularly if Saudi Arabia start fouling out of frustration as the clock ticks down without a goal.

Our pick: Salem Al Dawsari to score anytime.

If Saudi Arabia are going to produce something, their captain is the most likely source. Al Dawsari carries the memory of that stunning goal against Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, and in a do-or-die match, he's the man most likely to drag his side forward. He represents the best value in the Saudi Arabia goalscorer markets.
