Argentina vs Switzerland Prediction - World Cup Quarter Final

Argentina vs Switzerland

Argentina haven’t made it easy on themselves in trying to retain their title in this edition of the competition, needing to work hard to get to this stage. Still, Lionel Scaloni’s men have reached the quarter-finals, where they’ll face a tough Swiss side.

The South Americans needed to come from behind to beat Egypt 3-2 after going 2-0 down late in the second half to set up a clash against Switzerland, who needed penalties to beat Colombia in their Round of 16 clash.

These two nations will face each other in Match 100 of the competition, with it scheduled for Sunday, July 12, at 11:00 AEST.

To celebrate the momentous occasion that is the World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!

How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.

For example, if you’ve bet on Kylian Mbappe to score during one of France’s matches and during that match he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Jean-Philippe Mateta who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Mbappe is paid as a winner!

Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.

Quick Picks

Our pick: Argentina to qualify

Value bet: Messi first goalscorer

Long shot: Draw 2-2 in regulation

Argentina vs Switzerland prediction

After predictably topping their group, Argentina have gone on to find each of their knockout round games a struggle. They’ve faced potential shock eliminations in the two rounds to have been played so far, with late winners against both Cape Verde (in extra time) and Egypt.

Switzerland have been tough opponents in the knockouts, defeating Algeria 2-0 and beating Colombia on penalties after keeping it goalless in regulation. Murat Yakin’s side have been defensively solid throughout the competition, and are yet to concede outside of the Group Stage (in which they conceded a goal in all three games).

It’s no real surprise that Argentina have been made the pre-match favourites in the moneyline odds, and as our Argentina vs Switzerland betting odds page shows, but with this based on the game being decided in 90 minutes, we think there’s better value in the draw being the likely outcome. Three of Switzerland's last four tournament matches as an underdog against teams from another region have ended in a draw at the end of regulation.

Our prediction is for a draw, but with Argentina the most likely to qualify.

With Messi chasing history, it's worth checking out the players with the most trophies in football history for a bit of context, and if you want to line up the wider World Cup betting odds before this one kicks off, that's the spot to start.

Argentina vs Switzerland score prediction

There is significant value in the goals market for this match. The South Americans have scored three times in four of their five matches so far, but appear to be struggling defensively in the knockout stages. While the Swiss have been defensively strong, the quality that Argentina has could be too much for Yakin’s team to handle.

Firstly, value worth exploring in the BTTS market. While the ‘No’ is suggested as the most likely outcome, the 'Both Teams to Score' market has hit in six of Argentina's last seven knockout stage matches. Both Cape Verde and Egypt managed to score twice in regulation, and Switzerland appear to be stronger than both of those on paper in terms of quality in the final third.

By extension, we think value in the ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ market, although the ‘Over 3.5 Goals’ option could also be worth exploring. The 'Over 2.5 Goals' market has hit during regulation time in eight of Argentina's last nine knockout stage matches played outside of its own region; the 'Over 3.5 Goals' market has hit in four of Argentina's last five knockout stage matches against UEFA teams played outside of its own region.

A correct score of 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes is worth exploring, as this scoreline has occurred in three of Argentina's last four knockout stage night matches against UEFA nations.

value in the Argentina to lead at half-time market, as the South Americans have won the first half in eight of their last nine tournament matches.

Argentina vs Switzerland team news and line-ups

Predicted Argentina line-up (4-4-2): Emiliano Martínez, Nahuel Molina, Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martínez, Nicolás Tagliafico, Rodrigo de Paul, Leandro Paredes, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernández, Lionel Messi, Julián Álvarez.

Argentina are likely to keep faith with the same core they've been using in recent matches. Facundo Medina is expected to miss out with a knock.

Predicted Switzerland line-up (4-2-3-1): Gregor Kobel, Denis Zakaria, Nico Elvedi, Manuel Akanji, Ricardo Rodríguez, Remo Freuler, Granit Xhaka, Fabian Rieder, Ardon Jashari, Dan Ndoye, Breel Embolo.

Switzerland edged Colombia on penalties and are expected to stick with the side that got them through. Johan Manzambi is reportedly a doubt with an undisclosed problem, Michel Aebischer is reportedly a doubt with a muscle problem, while Luca Jaquez is reportedly a doubt with a muscle problem.

Player markets to watch

Lionel Messi is a likely contender to be an anytime goalscorer, but slightly more value is him to be the first goalscorer market, a feat he’s managed in each of Argentina's last three tournament matches against UEFA nations. Messi has also scored at least one goal in each of Argentina's last nine competition matches.

Enzo Fernandez has value in the anytime market after scoring against Egypt, with the midfielder often getting forward and having an attempt on goal in each match he plays.

Breel Embolo has scored or assisted in four of Switzerland's last five tournament matches, leaving the forward to have value in the ‘To Score or Assist’ market.
