Randwick Racecourse will see two top feature races take place in Sydney this weekend, with both the Epsom Handicap and The Metropolitan being held on Saturday, October 3.
These two races have both been a Group 1 at some point, although the latter has been downgraded in recent years to a Group 2. Still, that doesn’t detract from the popularity and competitiveness of this upcoming race.
Let’s see what could be in store…
Quick Picks
Our pick: Tempted to win
Value bet: Mazu in the each-way
Long shot: Provata each-way
Betting Preview
A total of 10 race meetings are on the card for the day (race times AEST):
- Midway Handicap (handicap) - 1,800m (12:05)
- Arrowfield Breeders’ Plate (Group 3) - 1,000m (12:40)
- Keeneland Gimcrack Stakes (Group 3) - 1,000m (13:15)
- Cornerstone Risk Group Dulcify Stakes (Listed) - 1,600m (13:50)
- United Resource Management Handicap (Handicap) - 1,600m (14:25)

- Asahi Super Dry Metropolitan (Group 2 Handicap) - 2,400m (15:35)
- TAB Epsom (Group 1 Handicap) - 1,600m (16:10)
- Precise Air Premiere Stakes (Group 2) - 1,200m (16:45)
- TAB One Pool Handicap (Handicap) - 1,200m (17:25)
Of the 10 races, the Darley Flight Stakes (Group 1), Asahi Super Dry Metropolitan (Group 2 Handicap), and TAB Epsom (Group 1 Handicap) are arguably the biggest races of the day, as each offers large prize pots and features the best horses in their classes.
If those purses catch your eye, it is worth seeing how they stack up against Australia's richest horse races.
Betting Markets to Watch
We have already written betting previews, tips, and predictions for the three races highlighted above due to their status on the card. Here, we thought we’d take a look at a few of the others just to give you a little more over the coming race day.
In the United Resource Management Handicap,Unleeshing has been made the early favourite, but there may be better value in Polymnia. She arrives off a third, with earlier placings in the form line, and gets Zac Lloyd for John O’Shea and Tom Charlton.
From barrier 10 she may need some luck in running, but she looks capable of featuring if she gets a good trip. Unleeshing has a stronger recent profile and is a much lighter 52kg (compared to 55kg), which is why she’s the favourite.
In the Precise Air Premiere Stakes, Tempted is the clear favourite with very little value. The better value is in the each-way, with Mazu arguably a good punt. He seems to love this race, placing in all three previous attempts, and is coming off a recent win at Randwick over 1,100m.
Our Prediction
Check the latest horse racing betting odds at Sportsbet.
Our top pick is Tempted as the likely winner of the Precise Air Premiere Stakes.
Our long shot is in the Keeneland Gimcrack Stakes, with Provata as the potential winner. She came from last and made up good ground at the finish in her trial; now she draws to trail in a handier position, which could favour her in this race.
