All eyes will be on Randwick Racecourse in Sydney once again this October as the Epsom Handicap (TAB) returns to the card.
The race is one of the top races of the flat season in Australia, with the meet being one of those that forms the ATC Spring Carnival. This year, it will take place on Saturday, October 3, with the race time to be decided.
But who is likely to be happiest once the riders head past the final post?
The ATC Spring Carnival serves up plenty more action around this feature, so it is worth browsing our free racing tips for the other meetings on the card.
Quick Picks
Our pick: Autumn Boy to win
Value bet: Well Written each-way
Long shot: Mr Miller each-way
Betting Preview
A total of 19 horses are in the field for this upcoming race, which features a total prize purse of AU$1.5million. It is a handicap race that is run over a distance of 1,600 metres and involves horses 3 years old and older.
Of the 19 that will go to post, several have won a Group 1 race. This includes the likes of Ceolwulf, Tom Kitten, Autumn Boy, Idle Flyer, Lady Shenandoah, Militarize, Atica, Panova and the Kiwi invader Well Written.
As such, many of those will be among those that could be favoured in the betting.
Something to keep in mind, though, is the going, with it being rated as soft at the time of acceptance on Tuesday.
This is likely to be the going come race day, but it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on any changes, as it can have a say in how well a horse does.
Betting Markets to Watch
With the field known, the early betting odds have favoured Autumn Boy, with Well Written also thought to be a leading contender.
Indeed, both horses have Group 1 wins, which is reflected in the price that has been offered.
Autumn Boy edges the early odds as he has proven Group 1 form, which includes a Rosehill Guineas win and a close second in the Doncaster over the Randwick mile.
He also ran second to Sheza Alibi in the Makybe Diva Stakes, and his camp says only that exceptional mare has beaten him over a mile.
Barrier 1 is a handy draw, James McDonald takes the ride, and his 55.5kg is considered a workable weight. When it comes to ground too, he is able to race hard even if a bit of rain comes.
Well Written is worth value in this race. She is unbeaten in seven starts and arrives from New Zealand in top order, but this is her Australian debut and a tougher test against seasoned Group 1 rivals.
Barrier 3 gives jockey Zac Lloyd options to settle close without being caught wide, which is why her draw has been called ideal. She carries 55kg.
Our Prediction
Check the latest horse racing betting odds at Sportsbet.
Our pick is Autumn Boy, as he has the experience on Australian turf, with Well Written the value pick due to concerns over whether she can take her form into an Australian race.
Our long shot, tough, is Mr Miller. He has a really attractive early price, given that he has a promising record that includes a recent win in the 1,500m Bankstown Sports Handicap (three lengths).
He also carries a light weight and has a favourable barrier draw at 5. If he can settle into a good rhythm and manage to land clean jumps, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be of each-way interest.
