MERLIN (5) was brave in his two outings at Addington cup week, placing behind Aussie stars Kingman and Leap To Fame in the NZ Cup and NZ Free For All respectively. Went into that week off a Kaikoura Cup win over race rival Akuta and his strike rate at this circuit and distance stands at 50 per cent. The one to beat. AKUTA (6) struggled a little during cup week but had been building nicely prior. Has won six of 12 tries at this venue so could well find his best. BETTER KNUCKLE UP (3) wasn't too far off Merlin when fourth in the NZ Cup in his last standing start attempt. Gets the handicap advantage over the top two. Threat. JOLIMONT (4) is worth thought off a win from a tougher handicap here last time.
