Zinedine Zidane is finally France's head coach. 

After years of speculation, false starts and an open secret that everyone in French football politely pretended not to know, the appointment was made official on Tuesday when the French Football Federation confirmed a four-year contract for the man who once carried Les Bleus to World Cup glory as a player.

Federation president Philippe Diallo made the announcement at FFF headquarters in Paris, calling it what it plainly was for French football: a landmark moment two decades in the making. 

"This is an exceptional moment, exceptional because of the person sat next to me," Diallo said, before Zidane himself described the job as nothing less than a dream fulfilled and admitted he was almost too emotional to speak.

The timing was not accidental. Zidane succeeds Didier Deschamps, whose remarkable 14-year reign as France coach ended this year, and the changeover closes one of the longest and most obviously telegraphed managerial successions in international football.

Diallo used Tuesday's unveiling to pay tribute to Deschamps' tenure before pivoting to the man everyone had actually come to see.

Zidane, for his part, made clear the wait had been deliberate rather than accidental, saying he had turned down several club offers over the past four to five years because the France job was, in his words, the only thing he wanted.

According to reports, discussions between Zidane and French football authorities began as early as February 2025, shortly after Deschamps signalled he would step down once the 2026 World Cup had concluded.

That gave both sides more than a year to quietly work towards Tuesday's announcement, even as neither party would confirm anything publicly until the deal was done.

Zidane's credentials for the role hardly need embellishing. 

As a player he lifted the World Cup with France in 1998, one of the defining moments in the nation's sporting history, and as a manager he later won three consecutive Champions League titles with Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018, an achievement no coach has managed before or since in the competition's current format, along with two LaLiga titles.

Deschamps leaves having reshaped French football over a decade and a half, and replacing him was never going to be a like-for-like job. 

That legacy is precisely why the federation waited so long to make its move.

Zidane's own account of the intervening years suggests a man who saw this as the one job worth waiting for, watching France from the outside as both a supporter and, in his words, a future manager.

He was careful on Tuesday not to overstate his readiness with specifics, sidestepping a question about whether Kylian Mbappé would keep the captain's armband and insisting he first needs to meet the squad before making that call. 

That caution, he suggested, reflects how seriously he takes the responsibility now in front of him.

He did offer a glimpse of his football identity, noting he played as a number 10 in his career and joking that where Laurent Blanc was Laurent and Deschamps was Didier, he would simply be Zizou, his own man.

He also confronted head-on the shadow of Spain, the reigning world champions who have beaten France in the semi-finals of both Euro 2024 (2-1) and the 2026 World Cup (2-0), acknowledging his years in Spanish football gave him deep knowledge of that rivalry while insisting every opponent, not just La Roja, stands between France and reclaiming the world champions' mantle.

That rivalry, he suggested, would define much of the scrutiny on his early months in charge.

Zidane's four-year term formally begins next month, with his coaching staff to be revealed a few weeks before his first matches in charge.

Those fixtures arrive fast, an away test in Turkey on 25 September followed by a heavily anticipated home meeting with Italy at the Stade de France, a fitting and emotionally loaded venue for a coach whose international playing career ended there against the same opponents two decades ago.
