Sergen Yalcin Named New Turkiye Head Coach

Yalcin takes coach job

The Turkish Football Federation has turned to one of its own.

On 20 October it handed Sergen Yalcin the Turkiye head coaching job on a four-year contract, a notably long commitment for an appointment made in the middle of a crisis. Yalcin replaces Vincenzo Montella, whose tenure unraveled with alarming speed.

The decision to install a domestic coach rather than reach again for a marquee foreign name feels like a deliberate pivot toward continuity and local knowledge after a thoroughly miserable stretch of results.

For Australian readers watching the slow churn of international coaching merry-go-rounds, the move is a familiar one.

A federation under pressure, a group-stage exit still fresh in memory, and a calculated bet that someone who understands the dressing room from the inside can steady the ship faster than another outsider.

Why Montella Was Sacked by Turkiye

Montella paid the price for form that simply could not be defended. Turkiye crashed out of the World Cup at the group stage, then followed that with four straight defeats in their UEFA Nations League campaign, a run that left the board with little room to argue.

Those losses came against serious opposition, which offered Montella some mitigation but nowhere near enough.

Turkiye lost 1-0 at home to France, 3-0 in Belgium and twice to Italy, 4-1 at home and 3-1 away, a sequence that convinced the federation board at a meeting earlier in October that change could not wait.

What tipped the balance, apparently, was the sense that the squad needed someone attuned to the expectations of a famously demanding fanbase.

The federation settled on Yalcin as a figure who knows both the domestic game and the weight of the shirt, and confirmed him as the new manager in short order.

Sergen Yalcin Turkiye: Besiktas and Galatasaray Pedigree

Yalcin, now 53, is no stranger to the national setup he has just inherited.

An elegant attacking midfielder in his playing days, admired for his vision and touch, he earned 37 caps for Turkiye and built a reputation as a technician who could lift the biggest occasions, even if critics sometimes felt he flattered to deceive.

His coaching record is where the real case for him sits.

Across two spells in charge of Besiktas, he won honours and credibility, most memorably steering the club to a Super Lig and Turkish Cup double in the 2020-21 season, still the defining achievement of his coaching career.

The wider trophy haul underlines his standing in the Turkish game.

As a player he lifted three league championships and two Turkish Cups across two spells totalling a decade at Besiktas, and added two Super Lig titles with Galatasaray, giving him a pedigree on both sides of one of football's fiercest rivalries.

He left his most recent Besiktas post by mutual consent in May, according to reports, after a single season back in charge.

Sergen Yalcin Turkiye: Belgium and France Loom

There will be no settling-in period. Yalcin's first fixture lands on 12 November, when Turkiye host Belgium in a home match that already carries the feel of a must-win, against a side ranked among the world's best.

Three days later the task gets no gentler. The new manager takes his team to France, meaning his opening week in the job pits him against two of the heavyweights that helped end his predecessor, a baptism of fire by any reasonable measure.

Those two results, arriving almost back-to-back, will shape early judgements on whether a long-term domestic bet was wise or merely convenient.

The federation has committed four years, but the verdict on Yalcin's Turkiye begins in November, with Belgium at home and France away deciding how patient everyone feels after that.
