Most Appearances for Australia of All Time

22/05/2026|SB Staff|Australia

Pulling on the Green and Gold jersey is the ultimate honour for every Australian football player.

For a special group, representing their country became a lifelong commitment. To celebrate this commitment, we’re taking a look at the legends with the most all-time appearances for Australia.

These ballers did more than just play matches. They carried the hopes of a nation across World Cups and endeared Australia and our particular brand of football to the rest of the world.

From gargantuan goalkeepers to midfield maestros, these are the top ten players with the most appearances for the Australian National Football Team.

Most Appearances for Australia of All Time

10. Mark Milligan – 80 Caps

Starting off our list and coming in at 10th on the Australian all time appearance list is current Newcastle Jets head coach Mark Milligan.

The versatile defensive midfielder made his international debut in 2006 and went on to win 80 caps for Australia.

Milligan represented Australia at four consecutive World Cups from 2006 to 2018 and also played a massive role in helping the team win the 2015 Asian Cup on home soil.

9. Jackson Irvine – 80 Caps*

The first of the current crop of players to make this list, midfield rock Jackson Irvine ranks as the ninth most capped player for Australia, so far earning 80 appearances and scoring 14 goals.

A vital engine for the national side, this tally is surely about to grow thanks to the upcoming World Cup, with Irvine all but certainly a lock for Australia.

8. Aziz Behich – 82 Caps*

Another current member of the Australian setup slides in at number eight on the all-time appearance list for the Green and Gold.

Marauding left-back Aziz Behich has to date amassed 82 caps for Australia, scoring three times in the process.

Like Irvine, Behich appears to be a big part of Popovic’s plans for the 2026 World Cup, so we expect his tally of appearances to rise in the next few months.

7. Mark Bresciano – 84 Caps

Midfield maestro Mark Bresciano ranks as the seventh most capped player in Australian history, making 84 appearances and scoring 13 goals.

Debuting all the way back in 2001, Bresc quickly became an essential part of the national team and will always be remembered for scoring the crucial goal against Uruguay in 2005, which helped send Australia to the 2006 World Cup.

6. Alex Tobin – 87 Caps

As tough and reliable as they come, defender Alex Tobin was a central figure for the Green and Gold throughout the 1990s.

Tobin amassed an impressive 87 caps for Australia, the sixth most of all time. During this time, he also captained Australia to the final of the 1997 Confederations Cup, showing both he and Australia could match it with the world’s best.

5. Brett Emerton – 95 Caps

Making his international debut on 7 February 1998 as a fresh-faced 18-year-old, industrious winger Brett Emerton went on to play for the Socceroos a staggering 95 times, making him the fifth most capped player in Australia’s history.

One of our finest exports, Emerton was a mainstay in the Premier League for most of his career, as well as a crucial cog in the national setup for over a decade.

4. Lucas Neill – 97 Caps

Just missing out on the podium of all time appearances, is defensive stalwart Lucas Neill.

Another one who made his international debut at just 18, Neill earned just shy of a century of caps in an international career that spanned close to two decades.

He also captained Australia on many of these occasions and played a vital role in both our 2006 and 2010 World Cup campaigns.

3. Mathew Ryan – 103 Caps*

From a former Australian captain to a current one, the bronze medal for all time appearances is currently in the possession of goalkeeper Mat Ryan.

He is set to captain his country once again at the upcoming World Cup and injury and form permitting, is on track to become the most-capped Aussie in history.

2. Tim Cahill – 108 Caps

Just missing out on top spot is the talismanic Tim Cahill. Undeniably the most recognisable Australian footballer of all-time, don’t feel too bad for Timmy, while he fell just short of most appearances, he is well clear for goals.

He scored 50 times in his 108 appearances for Australia, making him the highest scorer in Australian in history, as well as the first Aussie ever to score at a FIFA World Cup.

1. Mark Schwarzer – 109 Caps

Legendary shot-stopper Mark Schwarzer holds the record as the most capped player in the history of the Australian National Team.

Making his debut on 31 July 1993 at just 20 years old, Schwarzer racked up 109 caps for Australia in an international career that lasted over two decades.

Best remembered for his heroic penalty saves against Uruguay in 2005, which sent Australia to their first World Cup in 32 years. His calm presence and remarkable reflexes helped garner Australia attention on the world stage.

When you look back through the annals of Australian football history, Mark Schwarzer stands out as a true icon.
