Socceroos World Cup Group Analysis

10/03/2026|SB Staff|FIFA World Cup 2026 Tips & Predictions

After the official World Cup draw over the weekend, Australia now know who they will face in the group stages of next year’s FIFA World Cup.

The Socceroos have landed in the seemingly favourable Group D, which contains USA, Paraguay and a yet-to-be-decided UEFA qualifier.

What does a realistic path to the knockout stages look like, how do each of their opponents stack up and when and where will their group games be going down?

We’ll be answering all of this and more with our analysis of the Socceroos World Cup group below.

Socceroos World Cup Group – Opposition Analysis

USA

Group favourites, tournament co-hosts and recent victors over the Socceroos, there’s no doubt about it, USA are the biggest danger in Group D.

Currently ranked 14th in the world, under the tutelage of former Tottenham and Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino and possessing a side bristling with European-based talent, America are a far from ideal opponent for Tony Popovich’s side.

Add in home ground advantage, which is amplified ten-fold at a World Cup and the Stars and Stripes recent record over Australia, and this presents itself as the one fixture in Group D, where points of any kind will be seen as a victory.

Paraguay

Usually, South America means danger when it comes to football. However, Paraguay have always struggled to live up to the standard set by their surrounding countries.

Currently ranked 39 in the world, Paraguay have played Australia twice before. The most recent being 15 years ago in a match the Socceroos triumphed 1-0 in.

Most in the Australian football community will have already earmarked this as the Group D clash where the Socceroos can go out and collect maximum points.

UEFA Qualifier

This Group D opponent is still very much up in the air. The UEFA qualifier will be determined in March's playoff matches.

One of either Türkiye (25th), Slovakia (45th), Romania (47th) or Kosovo (80th) will take the final spot here and obviously, with Türkiye being the only of these sides currently higher ranked than the Socceroos, anyone but them will do just fine.

Socceroos World Cup Group – Overall Chances

All in all, this is one of the most winnable groups Australia could have hoped for. While missing out on a lower-ranked opponent from Pot 4, the Socceroos have avoided the nightmare scenario of facing multiple top-tier nations.

Australia could potentially end up group winners, should they spring an upset on hosts USA.

Winning just one group match with a decent goal difference should secure knockout stage qualification in the expanded 48-team format.

The tournament's new structure allows the eight best third-placed teams to progress alongside group winners and runners-up.

Potential Pathways to the Knockout Stages

Should the Socceroos ambush USA and top Group D, which isn’t completely outside the realms of possibility, they would face one of the best third-placed finishers in the Round of 32 on July 2nd in San Francisco.

A more challenging pathway awaits if Australia finishes as group runners-up, setting up a potential clash with Group G's winner on Independence Day in Dallas.

Group G contains Belgium, Egypt, Iran and New Zealand, with Belgium representing the strongest potential opponent in this scenario.

The knockout draw structure means Australia could potentially meet Belgium in the Round of 16 if both teams progress as expected.

A quarter-final meeting with Spain looms as a possibility further down the tournament pathway. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.
