Cristian Volpato Bio

Cristian Volpato is an Australian-born attacking midfielder and winger who has emerged as one of the most technically gifted young Australian footballers of this generation.

Born on 15 November 2003 in Camperdown, New South Wales, Volpato developed through the youth systems of Sydney United 58, Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers before earning a move to AS Roma’s academy in Italy in 2020.

He currently plays for Sassuolo in Italy’s Serie A and represents Australia at international level. He is known for his composure in possession, creativity in the final third and his eye for goal.

Cristian Volpato Club Career

Volpato began his football journey in Sydney, spending time with Sydney United 58, Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers during his youth development.

His technical quality and attacking instincts caught the attention of scouts in Italy, leading to a move to Roma’s academy in January 2020. At Roma, he progressed quickly through the youth ranks and signed his first professional contract in 2021.

He made his senior debut for Roma on 4 December 2021 in Serie A against Inter Milan.

Just a few months later, he scored his first Serie A goal in a 2–2 draw with Hellas Verona. During the 2022–23 season, Volpato continued to show his promise by scoring and assisting in a strong cameo performance against Verona, while also gaining experience in the UEFA Europa League.

In June 2023, Volpato completed a €7.5 million move to Sassuolo, one of the biggest transfer fees ever paid for an Australian player.

Since joining Sassuolo, he has continued his development as an attacking midfielder and winger, contributing goals and assists across Serie A and Serie B campaigns.

He played an important role in Sassuolo’s 2024–25 Serie B title-winning season and remained a key squad member upon the club’s return to Serie A.

Cristian Volpato International Career

Volpato was eligible to represent both Australia and Italy at international level due to his Australian birth and Italian heritage.

Early in his international pathway, he chose to represent Italy at youth level, playing for the U19, U20 and U21 national teams. Across those age groups, he made 20 appearances and scored 5 goals.

His international future became a major talking point in Australian football, particularly after he declined an opportunity to join Australia’s 2022 World Cup squad. Despite that decision, the possibility of a future switch remained open.

In May 2026, Volpato was called into Australia’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, officially committing his senior international future to Australia..

That decision has given Australia an exciting, creative attacking talent with high-level European experience and significant upside for the future.
