Riley McGree Bio

Riley McGree is one of the most creative and technically gifted midfielders to represent the Australian men's soccer team in recent years; a left-footed attacking midfielder with an eye for goal, a flair for the dramatic and the kind of big-game composure that has made him a key figure in Australia's recent campaigns.

Born on 2 November 1998 in Gawler, South Australia, McGree originally joined the Gawler Eagles as a four-year-old after the town's Aussie rules club was full.

Football's gain, it turned out. He came through the Adelaide United academy before embarking on a career that has taken him from the Belgian Pro League to the English Championship via the A-League and Major League Soccer.

In the leadup to the the North America World Cup - Riley Mcgree sustained a hamstring injury that will put him out of action for this year's World Cup.

Riley McGree Club Career

McGree came through the Adelaide United youth system and made his A-League debut on 19 March 2016 in a draw with Western Sydney Wanderers.

After two seasons with the Wanderers, his performances attracted interest from Europe and he joined Belgian Pro League club Club Bruges in July 2017 for a reported €69,000.

Loan spells followed back in Australia; first with Newcastle Jets, where he lit up the 2017-18 A-League finals series with a scorpion kick goal against Melbourne City that earned a nomination for the FIFA Puskas Award for the most beautiful goal in the world.

In July 2019, he returned to Adelaide United for a standout campaign, finishing as the club's top scorer with 10 league goals and winning both the Aurelio Vidmar Club Champion award and the club's golden boot.

In October 2020, McGree was sold to MLS expansion franchise Charlotte FC, who immediately loaned him to English Championship side Birmingham City for 18 months.

His form at Birmingham, where he was described as "undroppable" by the Birmingham Mail, attracted attention across the Championship.

In January 2022 he signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Middlesbrough, and has remained there ever since, signing a contract extension in July 2024 to keep him at the club until June 2028.

Across four seasons at the Riverside, McGree has established himself as one of the Championship's most consistent and creative midfielders.

Riley McGree International Career

McGree was first called up to the Australian men's soccer team in March 2017 for World Cup qualifying matches against Iraq and the UAE.

After a suspension from the under-23 program in November 2019, he returned to full favour and made his senior debut on 3 June 2021 as a substitute in a 3-0 win over Kuwait in a 2022 World Cup qualifier.

He quickly became a regular under Graham Arnold, producing a man-of-the-match display on his first start against Chinese Taipei with two assists in a 5-1 win. He scored his first international goal in a 4-0 victory over Vietnam in January 2022.

At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, McGree was a starter in all four of Australia's matches.

His most memorable contribution came in the final group stage game against Denmark, when his pass set up Mathew Leckie for the decisive goal in a 1-0 win that sent Australia into the round of 16 for just the second time in their history.

He also started in the famous round of 16 clash against Argentina, Australia's most significant World Cup result in decades.

With 27 caps heading into the North America World Cup, McGree's combination of creativity, technical quality and big-game experience makes him one of the most important attacking options at Tony Popovic's disposal.

He will be central to Australia's ambitions in Group D against Turkiye, the United States and Paraguay.
