Nestory Irankunda Bio
Nestory Irankunda is one of the most exciting young footballers Australia has ever produced; a direct, explosive winger whose pace, power and natural instinct in front of goal have drawn comparisons to some of the game's all-time greats before his 20th birthday.
Born on 9 February 2006 in Kigoma, Tanzania, to Burundian parents who had fled the civil war in their home country, Irankunda spent his earliest days in a refugee camp before his family emigrated to Perth when he was just three months old.
The family later settled in the northern suburbs of Adelaide in 2013, where Nestory would grow up, fall in love with football, and eventually take the world by storm.
Known for his explosive pace, fearless attacking mindset and ability to change a game in an instant, Irankunda represents a new wave of Australian talent built on flair and attacking intent.
Ranked by the CIES Football Observatory as one of the top 100 Under-20 players in the world in 2025, he heads into the North America World Cup as one of Australia's most dangerous weapons.
Nestory Irankunda Club Career
Irankunda came through the ranks at Adelaide Croatia Raiders before joining Adelaide United's pathway program, signing a scholarship contract in September 2021 at just 15 years old.
He made his A-League Men debut in January 2022, becoming the sixth youngest player in the competition's history, and scored his first league goal weeks later, a stunning stoppage-time free kick against Newcastle Jets, making him the second youngest goalscorer in A-League history at the time.
After three increasingly impressive seasons with Adelaide United, the Reds announced his sale to Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern Munich in November 2023, breaking the A-League transfer record.
He spent the 2024-25 season primarily with Bayern Munich II, training regularly with the senior squad under Vincent Kompany, before joining Grasshopper Club Zurich on loan in January 2025, where he was voted Player of the Month by fans in February.
In July 2025, Irankunda signed a five-year contract with EFL Championship side Watford FC, scoring his first goal for the club on debut with a trademark 25-yard free kick against Swansea City.
Nestory Irankunda International Career
Despite being eligible to represent Burundi, Tanzania or Australia, Irankunda committed to Australia and has never looked back. At youth level, he was instrumental in Australia's qualification for the 2023 AFC U-17 Asian Cup, finishing the qualifying campaign with eight goals in four matches before going on to score three times at the tournament in Thailand.
He made his senior debut on 6 June 2024, starting against Bangladesh in a World Cup qualifier and providing an assist in a 2–0 win. Five days later, he scored his first International goal from the penalty spot in a 5–0 win over Palestine, becoming the second youngest player to score for Australia at 18 years and 123 days.
Since then, Irankunda has grown into a key figure in the national setup, scoring against New Zealand in the 2025 Soccer Ashes and earning Player of the Tournament honours at the 2026 FIFA Series in Australia.
Selected in Tony Popovic's World Cup squad, he shapes as one of Australia's most dangerous attacking options; a player with the pace, unpredictability and big-game temperament to make a real impact on the grandest stage of all.
