Connor Metcalfe Bio

Connor Metcalfe is a dynamic Australian central midfielder known for his engine, tactical discipline and ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch.

Born on 5 November 1999 in Newcastle, New South Wales, Metcalfe came through the Australian development pathway before establishing himself with Melbourne City and later taking the next step into German football with FC St. Pauli.

His profile combines mobility, pressing intensity and intelligent positioning, while also offering technical quality and a willingness to break forward from midfield.

After emerging as one of the A-League Men’s standout young midfielders, he earned a move to Europe and has continued his development in a more demanding tactical environment.

Internationally, he has become a regular part of the Australian setup and has represented his country at Olympic, Asian Cup and World Cup level.

His mix of experience, work rate and versatility has made him an important piece in Australia’s midfield group.

Connor Metcalfe Club Career

Metcalfe developed through South Cardiff, Northern NSW junior programs, FFV NTC and then Melbourne City’s academy, joining City’s youth setup in 2014.

He progressed steadily through the club’s pathway, including time with Melbourne City’s NPL side, before breaking into the senior team.

His first-team opportunities increased over time, and he became a key midfielder for Melbourne City during a highly successful period for the club.

In the 2020–21 season, he produced standout performances, including a brace in a 6–0 derby win over Melbourne Victory, and was named in the PFA Team of the Season.

That same year, he won the Harry Kewell Medal as Australia’s men’s young player of the year. Across his senior Melbourne City career, he made 73 league appearances and scored 9 goals, while contributing strongly during one of the club’s most competitive eras.

In 2022, Metcalfe moved to Germany to join FC St. Pauli. The transition proved successful, with the midfielder establishing himself in one of Europe’s more tactically intense leagues.

He played an important role in St. Pauli’s promotion-winning 2023–24 2. Bundesliga campaign and then continued with the club in the Bundesliga.

By the end of the 2025–26 season, he had made 95 league appearances and scored 6 goals for St. Pauli, confirming himself as a reliable and adaptable midfielder at a strong European level.

Connor Metcalfe International Career

Metcalfe has represented Australia across multiple age groups and has become a regular senior international.

He first featured for the U20s in 2018 and later represented Australia’s Olympic / U23 side, helping the team claim bronze at the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship and taking part in the 2020 Summer Olympics.

He made his senior Australian debut in June 2021 in a World Cup qualifier against Chinese Taipei and has since grown into a dependable midfield option for Australia.

His role has expanded through successive tournaments and qualifying campaigns, with his energy and tactical awareness making him valuable in both possession-based and transition-heavy matches.

Metcalfe was part of Australia’s squad for the 2023 Asian Cup and later the 2026 World Cup.

One of the standout moments of his international career came in this year’s World Cup opener, when he scored Australia’s second goal in a 2–0 win over Türkiye.

With 38 senior caps and two international goals, he has become an established member of Australia’s midfield group.
