With State of Origin Game II due, the NRL returns with a full head of steam for a seven-game Round 16 that should deliver plenty of fireworks.
The Brisbane Broncos, Parramatta Eels and South Sydney Rabbitohs are all sitting on the bye, making the spotlight shift to teams doing battle on the field.
As the ladder tightens in the middle of the pack, points are at a premium, making every result from here feel like it carries finals-weight significance.

Newcastle Knights vs St George Illawarra Dragons Prediction
Friday, June 19, 8:00pm AEST - McDonald Jones Stadium
This is a must-win for both clubs, though for entirely different reasons.
The Knights are chasing a top-eight berth while the Dragons remain in damage control as they only have one win this season.
Kalyn Ponga has been in strong form when fit, and the Knights at home are a side nobody in the competition is particularly eager to face.
Newcastle have had a solid start to the season, proving they are a good team on their day, and with the Dragons figuring out their roster for 2027 and who the coach will be for the club’s long-term future, it’s hard to see where the wins will come from for the Red V.
Give us the Knights at home with confidence.
Head-to-head prediction: Newcastle Knights.
Betting tip: Dominic Young anytime try scorer.
Wests Tigers vs The Dolphins Prediction
Saturday, June 20, 3:00pm AEST - Campbelltown Sports Stadium
Wests Tigers redeemed themselves, defeating the Titans 36-28 in Round 15.
They faced the criticisms that were made after the 68-0 loss, and Jarome Luai responded by scoring three tries.
A win against a Roosters side without their Origin players is a red flag, but their form has been legitimate, and this trip to Campbelltown will be a test to see whose confidence will hold firm.
The Dolphins have won six in a row, and Kristian Woolf will need his key players to stand up if they’re to leave with the competition points.
We expect the road team to claim victory, which coincidentally makes this game a small-scale version of State of Origin.
Head-to-head prediction: The Dolphins.
Betting tip: Herbie Farnworth first try scorer.
Gold Coast Titans vs Penrith Panthers Prediction
Saturday, June 20, 5:30pm AEST - Cbus Super Stadium
The Panthers have been the competition standard all season, and despite a long trip to the Gold Coast, it’s hard to see this side letting up at this stage.
Penrith have barely missed a beat all year and remain the most ruthless side in the NRL when it comes to punishing any lapse in concentration from the opposition.
The Titans have had a difficult year, losing to the Tigers after beating the Broncos, and the search for consistency feels impossible.
Not even Keano Kini’s three line breaks in four minutes can save the day.
Back the Panthers to maintain their dominance and remain clear of the chasing pack.
Head-to-head prediction: Penrith Panthers.
Betting tip: Over total match points.
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Manly Sea Eagles Prediction
Saturday, June 20, 7:35pm AEST - Accor Stadium
This is a genuine wild card match, two sides that are capable of producing something memorable when least expected.
Manly have only lost two games under Kieran Foran this season, and after a little drop off in their performances in recent weeks, expect a strong response.
Canterbury have been hard to read, and with all the possession and territory against the Eels in Round 14, they struggled badly to score points, only managing 14 to the Eels’ 12.
We’ll take the away side in what could shape as a tight, low-scoring contest.
Head-to-head prediction: Manly Sea Eagles.
Betting tip: Under total match points.
New Zealand Warriors vs North Queensland Cowboys Prediction
Sunday, June 21, 2:00pm AEST - One NZ Stadium
Surely the Warriors have the same energy for this game as their coach did after their two-point loss to the Sharks.
They lost at home, which is shocking considering they have a 56% winning percentage at Go Media Stadium.
The Cowboys have shown plenty of fight this season, but they can’t afford many more losses as they are 2-3 in their last five games.
We think the Warriors, who are second on the ladder, will be too strong on the night as it will be their debut game at the One NZ Stadium.
Head-to-head prediction: New Zealand Warriors.
Betting tip: Big win, little win – Warriors 1-12.
Melbourne Storm vs Canberra Raiders Prediction
Sunday, June 21 4:05pm AEST - AAMI Park
The Raiders have been a perennial underperformer this season despite a tough schedule, and Melbourne’s resurgence makes this a daunting assignment at AAMI Park.
Craig Bellamy’s Storm have quietly put together a four-game winning streak and look like the kind of side that gets better as the season deepens.
Canberra fans will hope they come prepared for what is normally a physical battle against the Storm, after the Raiders lost 15-12 to the Eels, who were second last at the time of the game.
Melbourne’s class across the park and their ability to control the tempo of a game should be enough to get the job done.
Head-to-head prediction: Melbourne Storm.
Betting tip: Storm by 13+ points.
Sydney Roosters vs Cronulla Sharks Prediction
Sunday, June 21 6:15pm AEST - Allianz Stadium
With the Roosters sitting third on the ladder and playing some of the most polished football in the competition, this is the game of the round.
They lost badly to the Dolphins, but when your team has seven players out because they’re playing State of Origin, surely that’s understandable, right?
Expect some of the Origin troops back following Game 2 to sharpen their team.
The Sharks pulled off two massive plays to end the game in New Zealand, one being Will Kennedy blocking the Warriors field goal attempt and the second being Braydon Trindall’s 45 metre field goal.
Their four-game winning streak has shown they have fight, even without their best player in Nicho Hynes.
Trent Robinson’s men should have the class and depth to win this one, but don’t underestimate the Sharks’ capabilities.
Head-to-head prediction: Sydney Roosters.
Betting tip: Big win, little win – Roosters 1-12.
Brisbane Broncos, Parramatta Eels and South Sydney Rabbitohs – BYE
With NRL Round 16 being the second mini bye round of the season, the Broncos, Eels and the Rabbitohs make up the three sides sitting this week out.
