New Zealand vs Tonga Prediction – Rugby League World Cup 2026

The first of this weekend’s two Rugby League World Cup Semi Finals sees Pacific powerhouses New Zealand and Tonga face off.

The Kiwis will be looking to return to International Rugby League’s big dance for the first time in 13 years, while Tonga will be aiming to qualify for their maiden World Cup Final.

The winner here will then face one of Australia or Samoa for the trophy, but before then we need to work out just who that winner will be.

For the latest team news, analysis, odds, and betting tips ahead of this Rugby League World Cup Semi Final, check out our New Zealand vs Tonga tips and predictions below.

New Zealand vs Tonga Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

New Zealand enter this RLWC semi-final on the back of a ruthless 78-0 demolition of Fiji, a result that showcased just how dangerous this Kiwi side can be when their attack clicks into gear.

That scoreline however, masks some real selection headaches. Ronaldo Mulitalo misses out through suspension after a one-game ban, while Jacob Laban is sidelined with a lower leg injury, with Phoenix Crossland stepping into his place.

There's a genuine chance Kalyn Ponga could make a sensational return from a broken arm, and if he does, it would be one of the great comeback stories of this tournament.

Tonga, meanwhile, arrive with momentum and emotion on their side. Their 20-18 victory over Samoa last start was an epic, decided in the margins, and it has galvanised a squad that plays with a physicality few teams can match.

Isaiya Katoa's return from an ankle injury was a huge boost for their spine, and the extra control, composure and creativity he brings to his side was plain for all to see against Samoa.

He was also perfect off the tee, converting 4/4 and a player of his calibre in this kind of form is exactly what is needed to trouble a team as talented as New Zealand.

This has the makings of a tight, physical contest. If Ponga plays, New Zealand's attacking depth should give them the edge, but Tonga's forward pack being marshalled by Katoa certainly have the ability to send the Kiwis packing one game short of the final.

Betting tip: Tonga.

First Try Scorer Prediction

He scored the opener in Tonga’s nail-biting 20-18 win over Soma last start with a stunning solo effort and we’re backing Robert Toia to run it back here.

After two breakout seasons of first grade footy that has seen him play Origin for Queensland and win a premiership with the Roosters, Toia has established himself as one of the game’s premier centres.

Now fully accustomed to the big stage, stages don’t come much bigger than World Cup Semi Finals, and we don’t expect red-hot Robert to shy away from the occasion here.

Betting tip: Robert Toia.

Over/Under Prediction

If Tonga are to win as we have predicted, we fancy it will be in similar style to their victory over Samoa.

A tight, intense, physical encounter punctuated with moments of individual brilliance, rather than relentless waves of attacking brilliance.

The final points total in that clash was 38, which falls below the preset total of 39.5 here, so we’re taking the under in this one.

Betting tip: Under (39.5) total match points.

Line Prediction

Since New Zealand are current favourites in the H2H market, the line has given Tonga a start of 6.5 points.

Seeing as we’re tipping Tonga to spring an upset here, naturally we’ll also be backing them to cover the line.

Betting tip: Tonga +6.5 line.
