Most NRL Premierships in a Row

07/10/2025|SB Staff|NRL News

Winning a premiership is the ultimate achievement in the NRL. It’s what every single team, player and coach strives for at the start of each season.

Many players, coaches and even clubs have never tasted premiership glory. Not this lot, however.

This list of footy teams exists on the opposite end of the spectrum. Not only have they all tasted premiership glory, they have done so on consecutive occasions.

After their most recent NRL Grand Final triumph, the Penrith Panthers are the latest team to write their names into history with their fourth straight

This remarkable feat has inspired us to look back through the annals of Rugby League history in Australia to take a look at who has the most NRL premierships in a row?

A number of teams have gone on some memorable runs over the years, but one reigns supreme and by some distance. Who are they and how many premierships did they win in a row?

Keep reading to find out, as well as seeing which other NRL teams have had a hot streak or two over the years.

Our list of teams with the most NRL premierships in a row is below!

3 in a Row – Eastern Suburbs (1911-1913), Balmain (1915-1917), Eastern Suburbs (1935-1937), South Sydney (1953-1955), Parramatta Eels (1981-1983)

We’re defining a streak as at least three premierships in a row. There are four clubs that currently fit that criteria and have lifted the Provan-Summons trophy on three consecutive occasions.

The now merged Eastern Suburbs were the first to do it, wasting no time to assert their dominance over professional Rugby League in Australia.

What is now known as the NRL was formed in 1908 and it was just three years after it’s launch that Eastern Suburbs decided to hit their maiden hat-trick.

The club now known as the Sydney Roosters recorded three straight premiership victories between 1911-1913, later repeating the feat between 1935-137.

Balmain (1915-1917), South Sydney (1953-1955) and the Parramatta Eels (1981-1983) have all matched this achievement at different times throughout the competition’s history.

4 in a Row - Penrith Panthers (2021-2024)

Even though four premierships in a row is far from the all-time record, this particular four-peat may be the most impressive achievement in NRL history.

This incarnation of the Penrith Panthers have certainly put their name forward as the greatest side in Rugby League history with the dynasty they have created in the last four years.

They were the current back-to-back-to-back-to-back champions in a salary capped league.

In the NRL era (1998-present) only one side had managed to secure consecutive titles, the Sydney Roosters (2018-19). The Panthers not only went on to beat that record, they blew it out of the water.

Their junior system has produced the likes of Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai, James Fisher-Harris, Liam Martin, Isaah Yeo and more.

Not to mention the names they’ve lost to rival clubs along the way as they felt the salary caps squeeze - Matt Burton, Stephen Cricton and Viliame Kikau just to name a few!

They may not have the most but the circumstances in which they have obtained their four straight crowns have been arguably the most challenging of any generation.

5 in a Row – South Sydney (1925-1929)

When you’re the club with the most premierships of all time chances are you’re going to grab at least a couple in a row somewhere along the way.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have certainly done that and before winning three straight titles between 1953-1955, they became the first side to win five straight premierships.

The Bunnies went on a rampage Monty Python style between 1925-1929 to sweep all in their path.

They are the only club currently sitting on five consecutive titles, but they could be joined by the Panthers next season if they win the NRL once again.

11 in a Row – St George Dragons (1956-1966)

No, that is not a typo, the St George Dragons really did win a whopping 11 premierships in a row between 1956-1966.

In that time period they played 222 games, winning 183 of them, losing just 34 and drawing five.

Unsurprisingly, some of the greatest players ever to grace the game featured in that era for the Dragons including immortals: Reg Gasnier, Graeme Langlands, John Raper and Norm Provan.

They undoubtedly made the most of a somewhat lawless period of the game that had no salary cap, tackle count or even distribution of top talent.

Still, they will forever be a touchpoint for Rugby League excellence in Australia and created a record that is unlikely to ever be beaten.
