Most NRL Premierships of All Time

07/10/2025|SB Staff|NRL News

The Provan-Summons Trophy, also known as the NRL premiership is the ultimate prize in Australian club Rugby League.

Every year teams battle against one another over the course of the season with hopes of making the Grand Final and getting their hands on the premiership trophy.

Over the decades, some clubs have had more success than others in terms of winning premierships.

Some clubs have also had more success than others at remaining topflight franchises too, with many teams on this list no longer operating in the NRL.

While it hasn’t always been known as the NRL, in this list we are including all premierships won by clubs dating back to 1908, when the first incarnation of what we now know as the National Rugby League was born.

So which team has the most NRL premierships of all time? Let’s find out!

Wests Tigers – 1 Premiership (2005)

They all count. Kicking things off with one premiership are the Wests Tigers, not to be confused with the Balmain Tigers (we’ll get to them later).

Their lone premiership came in 2005. Who can forget that Benji Marshall flick pass in the decider when they defeated the Cowboys? If you’re only going to win one, win it in style and that they did.

St. George Illawarra Dragons – 1 Premiership (2010)

Joining the Tigers with one premiership in the pool room are fellow merger side the St George Illawarra Dragons.

After the Illawarra Steelers and the St George Dragons joined forces, they haven’t exactly seen a ton of success.

However, when super coach Wayne Bennett moved down to the Gong back in 2010, he took the Red V to Rugby League’s promised land and bagged them their maiden NRL premiership.

North Queensland Cowboys – 1 Premiership (2015)

Also, with just the one NRL premiership to their name are the North Queensland Cowboys.

After years of frustration and close calls, they managed to finally get the chocolates, with their victory over the Brisbane Broncos in the 2015 decider widely considered to be the greatest NRL grand final of all time.

Jonathan Thurston was the hero that day, slotting the decisive field goal in golden point, to seal a miraculous Cowboy’s victory, but who can forget Michael Morgan’s last-minute miracle?

Cronulla Sharks – 1 Premiership (2016)

The final team sitting on just the single NRL premiership are the Cronulla Sharks.

Busting the (at the time) longest running premiership drought in the competition, the Sharks defeated serial winner the Melbourne Storm in 2016 to collect title numero uno.

Such was the length of this aforementioned drought, Rugby League legend and former Sharks coach Jack Gibson said on commentary in 1988 “waiting for Cronulla to win a Grand Final is like leaving the porch light on for Harold Holt.”

The last thing Sharks captain Paul Gallen said before his side lifted the trophy some 28 years later? “Turn your porch lights off because we’re coming home with the trophy.” Iconic.

North Sydney Bears – 2 Premierships (1921, 1922)

They may now reside outside of the NRL, but just over a century ago the North Sydney Bears were a force in Australian Rugby League.

They went back-to-back in 1921 and 1922, but never tasted premiership success again and failed to return to the top flight after a failed merger with Manly at the turn of the century.

Newcastle Knights – 2 Premierships (1997, 2001)

Level with the Bears on two NRL premierships are the Newcastle Knights. Thanks to the exploits of the NRL’s eighth immortal Andrew Johns, Newcastle experienced a sustained period of success during the late 90s and early 2000s.

They also served up one of the most iconic moments in grand final history, with Darren Albert’s legendary match winner in the 1997 decider.

Newtown Jets – 3 Premierships (1910, 1933, 1943)

Another club that now finds themselves outside of top-grade Rugby League, yet still have multiple titles in their trophy cabinet are the Newtown Jets.

Like the Bears, they were a foundation club, forming in 1908. They won three premierships before exiting the top division in 1983 and now reside in the NSW Cup.

Canberra Raiders – 3 Premierships (1989, 1990, 1994)

Ask any Raiders fan and they’ll tell you they should have four, not three NRL premierships.

Yes, their loss to the Roosters in the 2016 decider was more than a little controversial, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.

Still, there were plenty of good times for the Green Machine when the likes of Maninga, Daley and Stuart ran riot in the late 80s and early 90s, delivering three NRL premierships to the nation’s capital.

Western Suburbs Magpies – 4 Premierships (1930, 1934, 1948, 1952)

Another one of the nine foundation clubs, the Western Suburbs Magpies won four premierships before departing the top-flight in 1999, forming a 50-50 joint venture with the Balmain Tigers to form everyone’s favourite whipping boys – the Wests Tigers.

Parramatta Eels – 4 Premierships (1981, 1982, 1983, 1986)

Yes, the Eels weren’t always the basket case the rest of the NRL have come to know and love.

In their heyday they dominated Rugby League in the 1980s, winning a total of four premierships including three in a row between 1981-1983.

Melbourne Storm – 4 Premierships (1999, 2012, 2017, 2020)*

The Melbourne Storm would be higher up this list if they hadn’t had their 2007 and 2009 premierships stripped off them after being found guilty of breaching the NRL’s salary cap regulations.

Unfortunately for the Melbourne faithful, there will always be an asterisk next to their premiership tally. However, four legitimate titles is still nothing to scoff at.

Penrith Panthers – 6 Premierships (1991, 2003, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024)

It’s six and counting for the boys from the foot of the mountains after the most memorable run in recent times which saw them go back-to-back-to-back-to-back over the last four years.

Their historic four-peat is a feat that has not been seen in recent teams and has put their case forward as the greatest ever team of the modern era.

Brisbane Broncos – 7 Premierships (1992, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2006, 2025)

There’s bursting onto the scene and then there’s the Brisbane Broncos. Founded in 1987, a decade later they already had three NRL premierships to show for their efforts.

They went on to add another three, before having to endure a near 20-year premiership drought. After coming mighty close in 2015 and 2023, Brisbane finally ended decades of heartache, winning the 2025 decider and becoming the latest side to have their names engraved on the Provan-Summons trophy.

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs – 8 Premierships (1938, 1942, 1980, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1995, 2004)

Entering the competition in 1935, the Bulldogs didn’t take long before winning their first premiership in 1938.

They have since added seven more to their trophy cabinet, including four in the 1980s alone. A decade which, along with their bitter rivals Parramatta, they dominated.

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles – 8 Premierships (1972, 1973, 1976, 1978, 1987, 1996, 2008, 2011)

The Sea Eagles have won eight premierships over the span of five consecutive decades.

It took them a while to get going, but after winning their first in 1972, 26 years after their inception, they have remained a constant force in Australian Rugby League.

Balmain Tigers – 11 Premierships (1915, 1916, 1917, 1919, 1920, 1924, 1939, 1944, 1946, 1947, 1969)

It seems odd to associate Tigers with Rugby League success, but despite the dross Wests have been serving up to spectators for over a decade now, their original incarnation, Balmain, were an absolute force.

They broke double digits in terms of number of premierships won before merging with Western Suburbs Magpies to form the Tigers the NRL wooden spoon has come to know and love.

St George Dragons – 15 Premierships (1941, 1949, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1977, 1979)

The original and the best? It certainly seems that way. The St George Dragons sans the Illawarra part won a whopping 15 premierships while an active club.

That’s the joint second most in NRL history and included a streak of 11 consecutive premierships between 1956-1966, which is a record that still stands today and frankly, in a now salary capped league, is unlikely to ever be broken.

Sydney Roosters – 15 Premierships (1911, 1912, 1913, 1923, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1940, 1945, 1974, 1975, 2002, 2013, 2018, 2019)

Originally called Eastern Suburbs, the side known today as the Sydney Roosters have been a perrenial powerhouse throughout Australian Rugby League history. Since their inception as a foundation club back in 1908, they've won a grand total of 15 premierships, the joint second most in history.

Only one side sits above them in terms of premierships won. Unfortunatley for the Tri-colours, it just happens to be their arch rivals.

South Sydney Rabbitohs – 21 Premierships (1908, 1909, 1914, 1918, 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1931, 1932, 1950, 1951, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1967, 1968, 1970, 1971, 2014)

Oldest, loudest, proudest. That is the Rabbitohs credo, and we’d be loud and proud too if we had the most NRL premierships of all time.

The only side in history to have over 20 premierships, South Sydney hold the record for the most NRL premierships of all time by some margin.

Six clear of the original St George Dragons and 13 clear of both Manly and the Bulldogs, who are the closest clubs that are still active, it will be a while before the Bunnies are caught, if ever.
