The VFL/AFL Grand Final has been played over 125 times, with 15 of 18 current clubs sharing the success of being crowned champions.

Who is waiting for that elusive first title? And who is waiting to break clear and lead the list of afl premiership winning clubs?

Without further ado, let’s have a look at who has the most AFL premierships of all time.

Who Has Won The Most AFL Premierships?

Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon jointly hold the record for the most AFL Premership wins with 16 each. Fremantle, Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney have yet to win a premiership, and Gold Coast have yet to play in a grand final.

The three biggest clubs in the land, the three biggest rivals, all tied on the most number of titles.

The race to 17 is well and truly on.

Not that their fans will have any trouble or problem reminding you that Collingwood are the reigning premiers and Carlton has done nothing but win wooden spoons and finish outside the top eight since 1995 when they won their last flag, The Blues are back in a space where they can finally, meaningfully contend.

Even the Bombers are starting to show signs of life that after decades of disappointment, there might be a decent light at the end of a long tunnel.

But, before Essendon can seriously consider winning a flag, they must overcome an obstacle they haven’t been able to move in over 20 years. Everyone knows which one.

Some might say it's the opposition supporter’s favourite thing currently in footy.

Who will win the race to 17?

AFL Premiership Winners List

Teams With 0 AFL Premierships

Fremantle, Gold Coast & GWS Giants

The race to register their first flag is down to three, Fremantle, Gold Coast & GWS Giants.

Three of the four youngest clubs in the competition are racing to win their inaugural flag before the others. For one it's a battle to catch up with a crosstown rival. For others, it's a race between the expansion clubs.

The dream of Flagmantle. It might be so close, but it seems so far.

Since entering the competition in 1995, the Dockers have only made it to the big dance only once in their history, and have made it to the penultimate week a handful of times.

Yet, the biggest prize of all still eludes the competition's fourth-youngest club.

The Suns have never made the finals in their 14-year history. That might change this year but the wait to register their first flag remains and will go on.

The closest to breaking their duck of the three title-less clubs is the youngest club of them all.

The Giants are making plenty of big big sounds both on the field and across social media, and after coming oh-so-close to a fairytale grand final run last year, are poised to have another deep run again.

Teams With 1 AFL Premiership

Port Adelaide & St Kilda

Rusted on Port Adelaide people from back in the day will tell you they have over 36 premierships on display as part of their successful and decorated history.

But in the AFL competition, the only one that counts is their last one. Which came to fruition in 2004 after years of being right up there but not quite breaking through.

Now 20 years on, with their list stacked with talent, the pressure on a coach to deliver with a team right in the window, can the deeds of that 2004 team be replicated to bring success back to Alberton Oval?

For Saints fans, the torturous wait for their second flag is wearing thin.

You can continually dine out on the fact you beat Collingwood by one point in a Grand Final, but when that’s over 58 years ago, it might be time to actually be really good again Saints.

With the biggest discrepancy between titles won and last placed finishes probably in the history of any sports team in any competition around the world, It’s a gap that Saints fans are yearning to close.

Teams With 2 AFL Premierships

Adelaide Crows & Western Bulldogs

It didn’t take long for Adelaide to salute as champions once they entered the league in 1991. And when they did, they went and made sure it wasn’t a fluke by winning it again the next year.

They are the glamour team of South Australia and while their flags have been up and down when it comes to peaks and troughs in form, still yearn and demand excellence.

They’ve only had the one other chance to add to their two flags since – and we all know how horribly wrong that day and what followed went, (Sorry JJ)

The Dogs fans dreaming of fairytales got their wish in 2016 with a miracle second premiership. Kind of like St Kilda fans, it’s the one they thought would never come but, on this occasion, it did, and it was beautiful.

You can still hear Brian Taylor’s voice ringing in your ear as he called a famous goal from the centre square.

Teams With 4 AFL Premierships

Brisbane Lions, North Melbourne Kangaroos & West Coast Eagles

Putting the bleak picture currently at North Melbourne to one side for a minute, everyone remembers how fun this team was in the 90s.

It was the second of two eras in which the Roos netted multiple premierships thanks to champions and household names.

Barassi, Kekovich, Blight, Stevens, Archer, Carey, and Pagan, just to name a few of the legendary figures.

How many years till there’s even a chance of speaking about them contending for one again? That’s the million-dollar question.

The Eagles are the richest club in the land and have wrestled the cup away from Victoria on four occasions.

Twice not soon after entry in the 90s with their state team. Once in their super team era of Judd, Cousins, Kerr, and co in their famous battles with the Swans.

And one in 2018, that is up there with the greatest deciders ever played. If you’re not of a black-and-white stripe persuasion, chances are you were more than happy to see the cup go West.

You can picture it now. Harley Reid lifting the cup someday in the future because you know they will rise again.

The amount of star power dripping in this three-peat team.

From the coming together from the merger between the old Bears and Fitzroy, The Lions dominated the early 2000s like no team we have really ever seen.

Their influence is still being felt with five of them going on to be senior coaches.

Four of them (Voss, McRae, and the Scott brothers) are still active and ruling over some of the biggest clubs in the land today.

They emerged from a period in the doldrums to get themselves back to being a perennial contender which nearly cemented themselves as kings of the jungle once again last year.

Then of course theres the famous 2024 thumping of the Sydney Swans to avenge their 2023 GF defeat to Collingwood.

Teams With 5 AFL Premierships

Sydney/South Melbourne Swans

The Swans held the longest drought in Australian football history for ages before breaking their painful 72-year wait in 2005.

Since then, the Swans have been amazing and consistent performers at the pointy end of the season, reaching the Grand Final on five occasions since their breakthrough flag.

They saluted in 2012, courtesy of some Adam Goodes brilliance and a Nick Malceski snap at the death to seal it.

You only need one hand to count the number of times the Swans have missed finals since the turn of the century. Which means they are always around the mark.

Teams With 8 AFL Premierships

Fitzroy Lions

While the AFL may have killed off the club, you can’t erase the history.

The Roy Boys won eight flags in their earliest days and regularly contended between the wars.

While things were tough from there on in keeping the team afloat, they still produced many great players who have left indelible marks and legacies in the game today.

Bunton, Quinlan, Murray, and Roos, are just a few who remain so revered today.

Many wish they were still here fighting as a thriving AFL club in their own right. I’m not suggesting that someone get any ideas when they need to bring in a 20th team after Tassie comes in, but… maybe there’s some old Roy Boy with a chequebook willing to bring it back to life?

Teams With 10 AFL Premierships

Geelong Cats

The golden era of Geelong is seemingly never-ending.

For years, they couldn’t break through and get that ultimate reward for their team of champions in the 80s and '90s.

And then suddenly, BOOM. The famous review in 2006 and from then, four flags in under 20 years and it feels like every second year after that, The Cats have contested deep into the finals.

Something about Cats having nine lives and not knowing where the edge of the cliff is right?

Teams With 13 AFL Premierships

Hawthorn Hawks, Melbourne Demons & Richmond Tigers

Since winning their first flag back in 1961, The Hawks have made winning flags part of their DNA.

13 flags, including multiple dominant eras in the 70s, 80s and the famed three-peat in the 2010s.

They’ve certainly had some stars come through their doors too.

With their rebuild under one of their favourite sons (and premiership captains too) hitting some skids, the road back to contending might take a bit longer than Hawthorn people might be able to stomach. But for a well-run club like them, their rise, when it comes, will be sharp.

The Demons ended 57 years of pain between premierships in 2021.

After a dominant era in the 40s, 50s, and 60s which saw them bring home nine premierships, the barren run included years of false dawns, years in the doldrums, and fighting for survival.

With their list in a prime position, they are no doubt aiming to challenge once again for the title this year and finally, get to celebrate and win on their home turf and not away.

When ‘Tiger Time’ arrived in 2017, the Richmond of old made a mess of their competition and quickly started adding to their premiership tally.

After 37 years between titles, the Tigers dynasty extended to three premierships in four years with a list and system built on knowing your role, executing what you’re good at, and loving your teammates.

Now back in rebuild mode, the Tigers are gathering their next wave of cubs to build the nucleus of their next premiership tilt.
