Betting Preview

After three rounds of the Nations Championship in what is known as the Southern Hemisphere section of the competition, England had the better record at the halfway stage.

Scott Borthwick’s team secured two victories (one defeat), having started with the 45-21 loss to South Africa. Since then, they’ve found some form and rhythm on the pitch, winning 73-8 against Fiji and 31-24 against Argentina.

But they will be without Alex Mitchell for their next three fixtures against the Wallabies, Japan, and New Zealand, with the Northampton Saints scrum-half currently out of action with a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, fly-half Fin Smith appears touch-and-go with his fitness after a calf injury in October, with Borthwick to name his side on Friday.

Les Kiss is still very early into his reign as Wallabies coach, but has found the going tough.

Australia lost their first two games, 33-31 and 42-26 to Ireland and France, respectively, but found a gear in their match against Italy as they blew them away 57-10.

Matches against England, Scotland, and Wales are scheduled. England, Scotland and Wales all have the Six Nations on the horizon too, so the latest Six Nations odds are worth a look once this campaign wraps up.

Since those first three games, Australia have had two wins against Japan (from two), a win and a draw against Argentina, a win against South Africa, and two heavy defeats to the All Blacks, and Kiss hasn’t yet named his squad for this clash.

And as well as some struggles on the pitch, Australia’s stars are going through it off the pitch too.

Players from the Wallabies enter the game against England amid a pay dispute, It is a reminder that even top rugby players sit a long way off the earnings of the highest paid athletes in the world.

Betting Markets to Watch

England have been made the big favourites to win in the international rugby odds.

England’s home advantage is believed to be enough to get them past the Wallabies, with a 25-7 victory the last time they met. The odds perhaps also reflect Australia’s unpredictability, while England appear to be more consistent and reliable.

A competitive game is likely to ensue, given the rivalry between these two nations. This could mean there’s value to explore in the points margin market and the handicap. In the latter, the line has been set at 9.5, which we think offers some value toward an Aussie outcome.

England’s recent form does not make them an especially convincing side to back to win comfortably. Their last six results include three defeats, a seven-point victory over Argentina and a dominant win over Fiji.

For the win margin, England to win by 8-14 points offers the value, based on the thoughts above. The odds appear to favour a blowout of 15+, but England remain too inconsistent for that to happen.

Our Prediction

We think the most likely outcome is an England win.

A long shot is the England to win by 1-7 points market in the win margin. While we think the game will be tight, we think it could be slightly higher than this. Still, there’s potential for 1-7 to happen, as the hosts have key players injured.
