Queue up some Daryl Braithwaite, because it’s time for the stars of the show – the horses.

The steeds that fly round the track are undoubtedly the rockstars of the racing world and sometimes there is a horse so legendary, they rightfully earn their place in Australian folklore.

As well as producing some of the greatest trainers and jockeys in the business, our great island home has also produced some of the most legendary horses in history.

With so many famous names and record breakers on the tip of our tongues, we thought we should count them off in the lead up to Spring Carnival. Get ready cause we’re looking back at the most famous Australian racehorses of all time.

What are the most famous Australian racehorses? Let’s find out.

Who are the Most Famous Australian Racehorses of All Time?

Kingston Town

We’re kicking things off with “The King”. As good a place to start as any, Kingston Town was a legendary gelding that ran riot in the 1980s.

A trailblazer for its era, Kingston Town was able to sprint over long distances, something that was uncommon in horse racing at the time.

In full flight, the thoroughbred was a sight to behold, his performance in the 1980 Sydney Cup is still considered as one of the greatest by any steed.

Kingston Town also won three consecutive Cox Plates in 1980, ‘81 and ’82, sealing its status as one of the most famous racehorses in Australian history.

Vain

You’re so Vain so you probably think this horse is winning for you. Well, if you loaded in on Vain in his hayday he probably was winning for you.

Another golden oldie, this special steed was a force to be reckoned with in the late 60s.

He was only active for a mere 13 months, but in that small window he won numerous Group Ones, including the Golden Slipper.

Manikato

Effectively the Usain Bolt of Australian Horses, Manikato was a legendary sprinter. Blessed with seemingly endless ticker, Manikato was able to keep the foot down from the 600m mark to the finish line.

In addition to winning multiple Group Ones and the 1978 Golden Slipper, this famous Australian horse also won five consecutive William Reid Stakes between 1979-1983 – truly remarkable.

Takeover Target

A cult hero with a remarkable story, Takeover Target is perhaps famous for different reasons than the other mounts on this list.

Somehow after a battling Taxi Driver forked out just $1250 to buy him at auction, Takeover Target and his new, unassuming owner went on to take over the racing world.

Worth every penny, Takeover transformed into one of the most feared sprinters on the planet.

We’re assuming his owner traded the driver’s seat of a taxi for the back seat of a limo, as Takeover Target went on to win Group One races in four different countries, amassing over $6 million in prize money along the way.

Might and Power

Immortalised in Australian racing folklore forever thanks to his performance at the 1997 Caulfield Cup, Might and Power had just that – might and power.

He won that edition of the Caulfield Cup by a staggering 7.5 lengths. In addition to that trophy Might and Power also won the Cox Plate and the biggest one of them all – the Melbourne Cup.

So You Think

So You Think you can prance? How about race? Because this Bart Cummings trained horse could do all of the above and more.

This stallion won back-to-back Cox Plates, the first of which was only his fifth career start. Beginner's luck? Not when you win it again the following year.

So You Think was rightfully inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2019.

Makybe Diva

Ok, now we’re really getting to the crème de la crème of Australian horses. Even if you aren’t a horse racing enthusiast, chances are you’ve heard of Maykbe Diva.

The legendary mare won a mind-blowing three consecutive Melbourne Cups between 2006-2006.

The Diva time and time again dominated her opponents with her superior stamina, using it to tear away from the pack in the latter stage of races.

In addition to her historic Melbourne Cup hattrick, Makybe also added a Cox Plate to her owner’s trophy cabinet as well as numerous other Group One wins.

Phar Lap

A horse so iconic he is seen as almost a mythical creature. Phar Lap will always be more than just a horse to Australia.

Running at the time of the Great Depression, Phar Lap’s remarkable feats on the track gave everyday battlers the country over something to cheer for, as he broke record after record.

Phar Lap won a total of 37 races, with the 1930 Melbourne Cup week being his magnum opus. He won four races that week including the big one and that was after being shot at just days prior. More than simply a horse, Phar Lap was the GOAT.

Winx

In terms of out and out domination, it’s hard to rank any Australian horse above the world famous wondermare Winx. 33 wins on the trot tell you everything you need to know about this freak of nature.

Perhaps the most famous Australian racehorse of all time, Chris Waller’s unstoppable Philly won an unprecedented four consecutive Cox Plates between 2015-2018. Talk about a sure thing, Winx took the Australian thoroughbred bar to another level.

Just for good measure she also racked up 21 other Group One wins, pulling in a mind blowing $26 million of prize money. A horse the likes of which we may never see again.

Black Caviar

Last but not least, is Peter Moody’s prodigal sprinter, the one and only Black Caviar. With a name like Black Caviar, she also sits amongst the Famous racehorse names of all time

The fact of the matter is this horse never lost a race. Black Caviar retired with a perfect 25-0 record, which included 15 Group Ones, an Australian record.

Voted the best sprinter in the world by the World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings (WTRR) on four occasions (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) Black Caviar is undoubtedly one of the finest racehorses this country has ever produced and a fitting way to round out this list of the most famous Australian racehorses of all time.

The beauty of this list is its never done, you never know when another mare could break into the record books and become a famous Australian racehorse with a name to rival that of Phar Lap, Qinx & Black Caviar.

If you need more of a horse racing fix heading into Spring Carnival then we have you covered. Why not check out our daily racing tips from our resident racing aficionados.
