Richmond Tigers vs Carlton Blues Prediction - Round 17 2026

03/07/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

Round 17 of the AFL season sees the rampaging Carlton Football Club close in on the top ten against a Richmond side that simply can't buy a win.

The Blues have been nothing short of sensational since Michael Voss's departure, improving to six wins from six under Josh Fraser with a comprehensive 117-64 demolition of West Coast at Marvel Stadium last weekend.

Sam Walsh was at his brilliant best, racking up thirty-three disposals at an eye-watering 90.9% efficiency, while George Hewett chimed in with twenty-six touches, ten score involvements and two goals of his own.

Harry McKay added three majors up forward, rounding out a performance that had Carlton fans dreaming of finals football.

Richmond's night, by contrast, was one to forget. The Tigers slumped to their thirteenth loss of the season, going down 106-72 to Collingwood at the MCG despite an impressive effort from Tim Taranto, who finished with twenty-six disposals and four goals.

These two sides have already served up one classic this year, with Carlton edging out Richmond 75-71 in a Round 1 thriller.

Don't expect a repeat of that nail-biter this time around, with the form gap between these clubs now a chasm rather than a crack, Carlton must win this one if they’re any hope of making finals.

Richmond Tigers vs Carlton Blues Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

The Blues keep marching on, and now they should march their way to a seventh straight win under the stand-in coach.

This fixture has remained a friendly one over the years, but there have been some genuinely strong wins mixed in among the closer affairs, which is exactly why the push for Josh Fraser to be handed the job permanently keeps growing louder both inside and outside the club.

Richmond, meanwhile, has had its excuses and it has been disappointing, and both things can be true at once.

There is, however, something worth keeping an eye on between now and season's end, with Sam Cumming, Taj Hotton, Patrick Retschko, Sam Grlj, Jasper Alger and Rhyan Mansell all showing genuine signs of promise for a rebuilding Tigers outfit.

Head-to-head prediction: Carlton Blues by 33 points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

This one is almost impossible to split with neither side boasting a genuinely prolific goal kicker in 2026, particularly with Harry McKay’s form this year being patchy at best.

Tom Lynch remains Richmond's most credentialled forward target when fit and firing, and he'll get every opportunity to lead the line against a Carlton defence that has had things mostly its own way in recent weeks.

We're taking Lynch here, though it comes with next to no confidence.

Betting tip: Tom Lynch.

Most Disposals Prediction

Patrick Cripps has been the driving force behind Carlton's stunning resurgence, and he shows no signs of slowing down as the Blues push toward finals contention.

The skipper has answered every critic who doubted him earlier in the season, consistently dominating through the middle of the ground against all comers.

Against a Richmond midfield that has struggled to contain quality opposition all year, Cripps looks set for another huge night at the coalface.

Betting tip: Patrick Cripps.
