Gold Coast Suns vs Collingwood Magpies Prediction - Round 17 2026

03/07/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

Round 17 of the AFL season brings a genuine Wildcard decider to the Gold Coast, with the Suns and the Magpies sitting either side of the top 10 and desperate for competition points.

Gold Coast host Collingwood following a horror run of form, having been humiliated 80-29 by Fremantle in Western Australia last weekend.

The Suns were borderline unwatchable in that match and with stars like Matt Rowell, Noah Anderson, Christian Petracca, Touk Miller and Ben King – scoring just 29 points in a match isn’t acceptable.

It was only the second time in club history that the Suns have been held to three goals in a match, and it leaves Damien Hardwick's side staring up at the top ten as we head int Round 17.

Collingwood, by contrast, lands at Coolangatta full of confidence. The Magpies thumped Richmond 106-72 at the MCG, with Nick Daicos putting together another other-worldly performance: thirty-seven disposals, 512 metres gained, fourteen score involvements and three goals.

Admittedly it was against Richmond, but pretty impressive and shows why Daicos is short-priced favourite to win his first Brownlow this year.

With both clubs fighting for their finals lives, this shapes as one of the more consequential matches of the Round 17 slate.

Gold Coast Suns vs Collingwood Magpies Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

This was an absolute classic when these two sides last collided at People First Stadium. The Suns raced to a stunning 35-point lead at halftime, a margin built on the back of a Collingwood side that somehow failed to register a single goal before the main break.

Fuelled by Josh Daicos, the Magpies stormed home in the second half but ultimately fell just a goal short, in one of the more remarkable comebacks-that-wasn't of the season.

Fast forward twelve months and we've got tenth versus eleventh, with both clubs desperate to cling onto their Wildcard seeding. Gold Coast is in genuine free fall, with reports now swirling of a growing disconnect between players and the coaching group, and five straight losses doing nothing to ease the pressure at People First Stadium.

Collingwood, on the other hand, scored freely once the game opened up last time around, piling on fifteen goals after quarter-time in an utterly effortless second-half display.

Doing that again on the road against a wounded opponent won't be easy, but the Magpies will fancy their chances against a vulnerable Suns outfit that looks there for the taking.

Head-to-head prediction: Gold Coast Suns by 4 points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

With the Suns' season unravelling and the pressure mounting on Damien Hardwick, it would be easy to overlook the damage Ben King has been doing up forward.

The competition's leading goalkicker has been relentless in front of the sticks in 2026 (except for last week) and a struggling Gold Coast side will lean on him more than ever to get the scoreboard ticking over.

King thrives on early ball and first-use opportunities, and few forwards in the league convert that kind of chance as ruthlessly as he does.

If the Suns want to silence a vocal home crowd and get off to a flying start, expect them to go early and often to their number one target.

Betting tip: Ben King.

Most Disposals Prediction

Nick Daicos remains the most damaging accumulator in the competition, and he's shown no signs of slowing down as Collingwood push for a finals berth.

He racked up thirty-seven disposals against Richmond just last week, and he's now produced thirty-five or more in each of his past five matches.

Against a Gold Coast side that's been torn apart through the middle in recent weeks, Daicos looks primed to feast on the space he'll be afforded. Don't overthink this one; he's the standout accumulator on the park this week.

Betting tip: Noah Anderson.
