The AFL finals series opens for real in the West and there's a home preliminary final sitting on the table. Fremantle and Hawthorn do battle in a Thursday night qualifying final at Optus Stadium, with the winner earning a week off and a straight run at GF.

The Dockers arrive off a flat note. They went down 119-82 to Carlton in Round 24, though with the minor premiership already banked, there wasn't a great deal riding on it.

Hawthorn locked away a top four finish, dismantling West Coast 107-45 at this very ground in Round 24. Jack Gunston picked the perfect occasion to remind everyone that he’s still got it, kicking five goals in his 300th match, while Nick Watson chipped in with three majors capping off a stellar season.

History between these two in September is thin but pointed. The last finals meeting came in the 2015 prelim, where the Hawks won 94-67. The more recent evidence favours the hosts, with Freo taking the W in Round Nine, 88-73.

A maiden premiership is finally in view for the Dockers, who’ve gone over 30 years without a flag. A win here brings them within two games of etching their names in history.

But the Hawks will come ready to spoil the party.

Head-to-Head Prediction

Round Nine gave us a decent template for how this one might unfold. Hawthorn owned the opening exchanges, with Gunston causing genuine problems for Luke Ryan, before Fremantle grabbed the game by the throat after the main break.

The scoring shot count told the story, 28 to 12 in the Dockers' favour.

The ruck battle is where we think this tilts. Luke Jackson has the legs to run Lloyd Meek ragged and behind him Caleb Serong, Andrew Brayshaw, Murphy Reid, Shai Bolton and Hayden Young present a genuine handful.

Hawthorn's on-ball group is good. We're not convinced it's great.

Down the other end, Tom Barrass, James Sicily and Josh Battle need to be at their absolute sharpest against Patrick Voss, Josh Treacy and Amiss. A forward line that has kicked 153 goals across the season.

The Hawks' back six has been outstanding for most of the year, but the form has tapered, particularly when opposition sides get their entries right.

Jackson feels like a match-winner here and we already know what this forward half can do.

Bolton will demand attention and we expect Hayden Young to be handed the job of shadowing Jai Newcombe or Will Day around the contest.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

Jack Gunston has been in outstanding goal-kicking touch all season and his five-goal haul on this ground in his 300th game was hardly the work of a man winding down.

Hawthorn have had a week to sit with this assignment and we expect them to come out swinging against the league leaders. Sides that arrive with something to prove tend to make it count in the opening quarter.

He was a genuine problem for Luke Ryan back in Round Nine, too. We'll take Gunners to get the Hawks on the board first.

Most Disposals Prediction

Caleb Serong doesn't do quiet games. The Dockers' engine room leader has spent the season putting bigger names to shame at the contest and is unlikely to change anything here.

With Fremantle expected to control the clearances through Jackson's ruck work, Serong will be key to Fremantle’s distribution.

Hawthorn's midfield is strong, no doubt.

But we’re not convinced these Hawks can stop the elite Fremantle contingent of on-ballers.
