AFL 2024 Finals Preview – Geelong Cats

26/08/2024|SB Staff|AFL Tips & Predictions

Welcome to The Huddle’s AFL Finals previews!

After the tightest and craziest season ever, we are finally down to the final eight teams that will battle it out for this year’s premiership.

As we gear up for all the September action, it’s time to look at and preview all the teams that have qualified for the AFL Finals in 2024.

Having spent all but one week inside the top eight, lets preview how the Geelong Cats are shaping up ahead of another AFL Finals campaign.

Geelong Cats’ Road to the AFL Finals

The edge of the cliff seemingly doesn’t exist for this football club.

Yes, they missed the finals last year after winning the flag in 22’, but as night follows day, they’re back at the pointy end of the ladder coming into September.

When everyone tipped them to be a team to continue sliding, they burst out of the blocks winning their first seven games in a row. Because of course, it’s what Geelong does.

They followed that with losing six of their next seven games, including a 63-point loss to Carlton on a Friday night which left the Cats at risk of dropping out of the eight.

Yet they steadied the ship and stayed in the top eight for every week of the year, recording a series of strong wins to secure another top four finish for the 14th time in 18 years.

Players to Watch

Jeremy Cameron

Some experts still name this guy as the best player in the competition. Every time you see him play, its hard to argue against.

Not only is he one of the best key forwards in the game with 49 goals this season, but the star forward’s “Roaming Jeremy” role around the ground has seen him become a matchup nightmare for opposition coaches.

He’s rated elite for disposals, kicks, and marks, while averaging 2.3 goals per game. Handy.

The bigger the stage, the bigger the performance for Jezza. The September stage is one he usually saves his best for too.

Gryan Miers

He’s the Cats’ “connector” between midfield and forward.

After breaking the record last season for the most goal assists ever, Miers has continued being one of the most dangerous and best half-forwards in the game.

This year, he’s again ranked in the top 10 for most goal assists this season, and he’s rated elite for disposals, kicks, and tackles. All which makes him an important magnet for Chris Scott and one that can get under the guard of oppositions if not taken seriously.

Tom Stewart

This year will only add to the legend of Tom Stewart’s already legendary career.

After having a mortgage on a spot in the half-back line of the All-Australian team for the past half a decade, Teams started paying some close attention to Stewart this season and running a hard tag on him.

Skill of player and coaching combined, The Cats great worked through the attention to break the tag and continue being a thorn in opposition sides.

He’s an incredible player who will no doubt have a big say on how far the Cats go this September.

Why Geelong can win the AFL Grand Final

What’s the old saying from former Australian cricket all – rounder Dan Christian? “Old blokes win s**t.”

The Cats have just been there and done that so many times before and know far better than any team in it, bar probably the Swans, what September footy is all about.

While it’s probably the least talented of all the Geelong teams to make the finals in the 21st century, they know what to do and how to win games at this time of year.

How Many Premierships Do Geelong Have?

10. Most recent AFL Premiership – 2022.

Prediction: Either out in straight sets or lose the prelim. 4th-6th

Geelong Cats AFL Premiership Odds
