Essendon Bombers vs Melbourne Demons Prediction - Round 5 2026

08/04/2026|Josh Jenkins|AFL Tips & Predictions

Gather Round is back for 2026, and for the fourth year running it’s a party in Radelaide. While the stakes are high across the board, few matches feel as lopsided as this Saturday's clash between the Melbourne Demons and the struggling Essendon Bombers at the iconic Adelaide Oval.

Although most matchups with Essendon tend to feel lopsided these days.

The Dees are well and truly on the up under the direction of inspirational skipper Max Gawn.

Currently entrenched in the top eight with a 3-1 record, Melbourne is playing a high-octane brand of footy that has them averaging nearly 100 points per game.

Following a clinical upset of the Suns, they’ll be looking to bank another four points and keep their climb toward the top four alive while avoiding any hint of complacency that the Bombers may invite.

For Essendon, the narrative is much grimmer. The Bombers have lost their last 17 matches and find themselves as current wooden spoon favourites.

Alongside Richmond, they are one of only two clubs yet to register a win this season.

While they showed glimpses of defensive resolve and a spirited second-half comeback against the Bulldogs last week, they remain a team searching for an identity and, more importantly, a way to stem the flow of goals.

Historically, this matchup hasn't been a high-scoring shootout; nine of the last 12 encounters between these two have gone under the total match points line.

However, with the 2026 Dees looking the real deal and the Bombers desperate to break their duck, anything could happen under the bright lights of Adelaide.

So, bring those Barossa wines and come down to Adelaide Oval for a footy spectacle, Dons fans will probably be safe to leave the bubbles at home though.

Essendon Bombers vs Melbourne Demons Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

Hardly excitement dripping from this one unless you’re a Dees fan enjoying seeing your new group blossom and get through an in-game training run.

Melbourne are averaging almost 100 points per game and are playing a speedy style suited to its younger players.

Max Gawn keeps leading by example, too; he racked up 22 disposals, 32 hit-outs and nine key last-quarter disposals when Gold Coast were looking to make a run last week.

Essendon were chopped liver early as the Dogs kicked seven goals in the opening quarter before slamming on the brakes.

The Bombers did show some fight and an ability to defend, something we’ve seen little of early this season; but it wasn't enough to secure a result. Zach Merrett played an excellent game, but it looks like a long season for the former captain

On neutral territory, we still think the Dees will run away with this to move to 4-1, though Essendon’s improved belief might keep them competitive for longer than expected.

Betting tip: Melbourne Demons by 25 points.

First Goal Scorer Prediction

While Bayley Fritsch is a chance to return, he may be a bit tentative in returning from a painful foot injury. Instead, we’re looking at Jake Melksham to hit the scoreboard first against the Bombers.

Melksham has been a reliable figure for the Dees this season, known for his composure, safe hands and high percentage play.

With Melbourne expected to dominate the early clearances, expect Melksham to find space in the forward 50 and slot the opener.

Betting tip: Jake Melksham.

Most Disposals Prediction

While Zach Merrett is usually the go-to, rising star Archie Roberts is currently in a purple patch that is impossible to ignore.

Roberts is fresh off a career-high 37 disposals against the Bulldogs, operating at a staggering 86% efficiency.

He’s averaging 27 disposals a game in 2026, and with Melbourne likely focusing their attention on tagging Merrett; the 20-year-old Roberts should find the space to lead the stats sheet once again.

Betting tip: Archie Roberts 30+ disposals.
