Who has had the most disposals in a game in AFL history?

Some of the competition's biggest ball winners have made a habit of amassing a heap of the ball throughout their careers and consistently posting massive disposal counts week to week.

Once upon a time, getting 30 disposals a game was considered a lot of the ball; nowadays, players do it routinely. 40 touches have become the new 30… And if you hit 50… you’ve had a really big day.

Eight players have raised the bat for the magical 50 disposal marker in VFL/AFL history… one of them has even done it three times.

As the game has evolved from inside midfielders ruling the roost to the run-and-carry distribution game, the change in the game has seen different types of players rack up more and more disposals as time goes on.

So, who has recorded the most disposals ever in an AFL game? Let’s check it out in Sportbet’s list below!

Most Disposals in an AFL Game

1. Tom Mitchell – 54 disposals (2018 vs Collingwood)

On the way to winning his Brownlow Medal in 2018, Mitchell gave himself another dose of leather poisoning, notching 54 touches (20 kicks, 34 handballs) to set a brand-new all‑time record. It was one of those freakish performances you just can’t look away from.

Not that it bothered then Collingwood coach, Nathan Buckley, who was quoted as calling the effort “overblown” and wasn’t too concerned with Mitchell getting so much of the ball.

He might have had a point, though, as Collingwood did go on to win the game, but 54 touches is still massive!

2. Harry Sheezel – 54 disposals (2025 vs Richmond)

Fast forward to 2025, and Kangaroos star boy Harry Sheezel equalled Mitchell’s record. At 20 years old, in a must-win game for his footy club, Sheezel put his team on his back and amassed more of the football than anyone else.

We knew from his very first game that he was a star and destined for greatness. It didn’t take too long before he put his name in the record books.

3. Gary Ablett Jr. – 53 disposals (2012 vs Collingwood)

The early days of the Gold Coast Suns largely saw Gary Ablett Jr take on entire midfield brigades on his own. As was the case on this day that he raised the bat for a half-century at the MCG against the Pies.

The little master was in vintage form that day against Collingwood—magnetic, silky, and straight-up unstoppable. He was racking up touches like they were going out of fashion.

4. Greg Williams – 53 disposals (1989 vs St Kilda)

“Diesel” unleashed some vintage Greg Williams wizardry in ’89, piling on 53 disposals in a masterclass of ball-handling and game-sense. Classic Williams.

As good a day as he had, he’s still having a good old complain that he didn’t receive a Brownlow vote that day! He says it cost him another one!

5. Barry Price – 52 disposals (1971 vs Fitzroy)

Way back in 1971, Barry Price was a disposal machine. He became the first man in VFL/AFL history to rack up more than 5o disposals in a game, collecting 52 touches on Fitzroy. It was a near‑obsession with the footy in that match.

At the time, this was the second-highest total in AFL/VFL history at the time and made him the first player to reach that milestone in the modern statistical era. Price was also the first player to break the 50-disposal barrier.

6. Scott Thompson – 51 disposals (2011 vs Gold Coast)

Everyone took their turn feasting on the Gold Coast in their first year of the competition. Whether it was a record score, record goal-haul, or record disposal tallies, Everyone wanted to fill their boots.

Scott Thompson was unstoppable against the Suns in 2011 when the Crows got to play them, racking up a massive 51 touches. Definitely one of those days where everything just clicked

7. Lachie Neale – 51 disposals (2019 vs Richmond)

Lachie Neale showed his class in 2019, going toe-to-toe with Richmond in the final round of the 2019 home and away season.

With the Lions hunting a top-two finish that year, the ball was almost a magnet to the superstar midfielder, as he racked up 51 disposals in a prolific display.

The Lions lost the day, but Neale caught a bout of leather poisoning for the plane ride home.

8. John Greening – 50 disposals (1971 vs Geelong)

At 21 years of age, John Greening was doing things that not many had done before at his age.

In 1971, John Greening had himself a day when he joined his teammate Barry Price in becoming the second man to hit the 50 disposal mark in a game, the second one for Collingwood in a season.

He hit the mark against Geelong, raising the bat for a well-made 50.

9. Tom Mitchell – 50 disposals (2017 vs Collingwood)

One year before his record-breaking 54, Mitchell was already cooking against the Pies with a 50‑touch performance against Collingwood in 2017. Clearly, the seeds of greatness were already planted for this ball magnet.

10. Tom Mitchell – 50 disposals (2018 vs Greater Western Sydney)

In the same year that he notched his record-breaking 54 disposal game, Mitchell dropped another 50+ disposal game.

This time, he was a ball magnet against the Giants in Round 15, collecting an even 50 disposals.

He was already on course for the Brownlow Medal that year, but another mammoth display of ball-winning in front of the umpires ensured that he would receive more votes on his way to collecting Charlie.
