Who has played the most consecutive games of VFL/AFL footy in history?

History will be made on Saturday, May 3rd when Collingwood player Jack Crisp breaks one of the longest-standing records in league history when he runs out for his 245th AFL match in a row. Overtaking the late-great Jim Stynes’ record of 244 games. A record many thought would never be touched.

It’s a monumental feat, in this day and age of how fast the game is, athlete management, injury rates, and the current state and crackdown of the match review officer make the achievement all the more remarkable.

This got us thinking, who are the other players who have played the most consecutive AFL Games in a row in VFL/ AFL history?

We’ve delved into the record books to find the players with the longest game streaks. Here they are below.

Who Has Played the Most Consecutive AFL Games?

1. Jack Crisp – 245 games (and counting)

The new custodian of the record began his streak back in Round 18 2014, just his 13th career game, when Crisp was still playing for Brisbane.

The last time Crisp missed a game of AFL, TikTok had yet to be invented, Michael Clarke was still captain of Australia and the phenomenon that is Married at First Sight had yet to grace Australian televisions.

2. Jim Stynes - 244 games

The AFL’s original Irish experiment Stynes continued to amaze everyone with his deeds during his AFL career. Most amazing was his streak of consecutive games.

Stynes’ streak began in Round 16, 1987. A streak that saw him win a Brownlow Medal in 1991, encompassing plenty of mid-week surgeries and playing with injuries. His streak came to an end in Round Four, 1998, as he was finally struck down by a broken hand.

3. Adem Yze – 226 games

A long-time teammate of Stynes, it was thought for a long time that Adem Yze would be the one to dethrone Stynes’ record when he started stringing together all the consecutive games.

Yze’s streak began early in the 1997 season and ended almost ten years later to the round when he was dropped due to form reasons, with his streak coming to an end on 226 consecutive games.

4. Adam Goodes – 204 games

One of the best players ever seen, Goodes’ streak began in Round 22 1999. Throughout his streak, he won two Brownlow Medals and a Premiership for the Swans, and at the time, became the fourth player to play 200 games in a row.

It was thought that Goodes’ streak would come to an end in 2009 when he was given a one-match ban for rough conduct. Goodes beat the charge by convincing the tribunal that Power player Matt Thomas had just hit his head on the turf while slipping over.

Goodes' streak ultimately came to an end when Paul Roos decided to rest Goodes in a game against Hawthorn.

5. Jack Titus – 202 games

Tigers champion goalkicker Jack Titus was the lifeblood of the Richmond Football Club.

For a long time, he held all the records at the Richmond Football Club, including games played, most goals, most grand finals, and most consecutive games.

His streak of most consecutive games started when he debuted at 18 years old in 1926. His streak ended when he finished his career at the Tigers 202 games later when he announced his retirement from the VFL.

6. Brett Kirk – 200 games

The Spirit of the ‘Bloods Culture’ Brett Kirk was the ultimate captain of the Sydney Swans and played through everything, starting in Round 14 2002

Kirk’s streak of 200 consecutive games came to an end when he called time on his career, announcing in 2010 that he would retire once the Swans were knocked out of the finals. Which happened to be his 200th consecutive game against the Western Bulldogs in a Semi-Final.
