Players With The Most AFL Goals In History

1. Tony Lockett (St Kilda/Sydney Swans) – 1360

Kicking things off is the greatest goalkicker in AFL/VFL history, the man they call “Plugger” – Tony Lockett.

Lockett kicked a mind blowing 1360 goals over a storied 18-year playing career.

Playing for both St Kilda and Sydney, Plugger recorded six 100-goal seasons, won the Brownlow, four Coleman Medals, was a five-time All-Australian and has been inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame – not bad.

Ironically, Lockett may be best known for kicking a behind. The famous one-pointer after the siren that helped Sydney qualify for the 1996 Grand Final.

One of the greatest players to ever lace up a boot, Tony Lockett’s ridiculous record of 1360 six-pointers won’t be broken anytime soon.

2. Gordon Coventry (Collingwood) – 1299

Runner up on this list and the man that was dethroned by Plugger in 1999, is Collingwood legend Gordon Coventry.

Coventry fell just one major short of 1300 career goals, kicking 1299 in 306 games for the Magpies.

Plying his trade in the 1920s and ‘30s, Coventry was a true trailblazer.

He was the first player to reach the promised land of 1000 goals and also the first to play 300 games.

His record of 1299 goals stood for over 60 years until Plugger finally eclipsed him.

3. Jason Dunstall (Hawthorn) – 1254

Rounding out the podium of six-point superstars is Hawthorn hero Jason Dunstall.

Arguably the greatest AFL player Queensland has ever produced, Dunstall kicked 1254 goals in just 269 games.

He won the Coleman medal three times in an era where he had to go toe-to-toe with other goal kicking luminaries such as Tony Lockett and Gary Ablett Snr.

He also won four premierships with his beloved Hawks and was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2022.

4. Lance Franklin (Hawthorn/Sydney Swans) – 1066

The most recent player in the top 10 all-time goalkickers to play, Lance “Buddy” Franklin is a modern marvel.

Franklin played 354 games across spells at both Hawthorn and Sydney, kicking 1066 goals.

While injuries have begun to take their toll and retirement is fast approaching for Buddy, he will more than likely pass Doug Wade and move to fourth on this list before he hangs up the boots. Explore more on the living legend that is Buddy with our Best Of Buddy article.

5. Doug Wade (Geelong/North Melbourne) – 1057

He may have missed out on the top three AFL goalkickers of all-time, but Doug Wade still managed to make the exclusive 1000 club.

Only six men in history have more than 1000 AFL goals to their name and Doug Wade is one of them.

He played for both Geelong and North Melbourne between 1961-1975, winning two premierships and four Coleman Medals.

6. Gary Ablett Snr (Hawthorn/Geelong) – 1031

When your nickname was “God” it’s pretty safe to assume you could play ball.

Widely considered to be one of the greatest AFL players of all time, Gary Ablett Snr was renowned for more than just his exploits in front of goal.

But they weren’t too shabby if we’re being honest. Ablett Snr is the sixth and final member of the 1000 club.

A Geelong legend, he kicked 1021 goals across 242 games for the Cats, but he actually started his career at Hawthorn.

Ablett played one season for the Hawks, playing 10 games and kicking six six-pointers. They clearly didn’t think he had what it took to excel at the highest level – great read guys, great read.

7. Jack Titus (Richmond) – 970

Falling just short of that elusive 1000 club is Richmond royalty Jack Titus.

The ultra-durable Titus nailed 970 goals in 294 games for the Tigers. Along the way he also set the record for most consecutive games played, which stood for nearly a decade.

A true servant to the game, every year the AFL presents the “Jack Titus Service Award” for outstanding service to the game.

8. Matthew Lloyd (Essendon) – 962

When your first kick in the AFL results in a goal, it’s safe to say you’re probably in for a pretty prolific career in front of the sticks.

That certainly was the case for Bombers' big man Matthew Lloyd. He scored a goal with his first kick in the AFL and did not stop there.

He went on to kick an additional 925 across 270 games for Essendon. A highflyer as well as an elite sharpshooter, Lloyd took home the Mark of the Year award as well as Goal of the Year during his career.

9. Leigh Matthews (Hawthorn) – 915

Almost known more for his exploits in the coach’s box than his exploits in front of the sticks, it’s sometimes easy to forget just how prolific Leigh Matthews was as a player.

Yes, who could forget when he led the Lions to back-to-back-to-back premierships in the early 2000s, (he also secured Collingwood a flag with clipboard in hand) but he was no slouch when wearing a Guernsey of his own.

Matthews kicked 915 goals for Hawthorn across 332 games and is officially recognised as “the best player of the 20th century” according to the AFL – no biggie.

10. Peter McKenna (Collingwood/Carlton) – 874

Rounding out the top 10 is dual Coleman medalist Peter McKenna. While he didn’t boot quite as many majors as some of his counterparts, he had a truly insane strike rate.

McKenna’s 874 career goals came in just 191 appearances. Mckenna also scored at least one goal for 121 consecutive matches – an AFL/VFL record.

Most AFL Goals Honourable Mentions

Jack Riewoldt (Richmond) – 787

One of only three active players on this list, Richmond vice-captain Jack Riewoldt has kicked 787 goals in 347 appearances for Richmond.

Barry Hall (Sydney Swans/Western Bulldogs) – 746

Big bad Barry kicked 746 goals across 289 games and three clubs. He became the first player in history to kick 100 goals for three different clubs, doing so for St Kilda, the Sydney Swans and the Western Bulldogs.

Tom Hawkins (Geelong) – 796

Three-time premiership winner and current Geelong forward Tom Hawkins has kicked 796 goals in 359 games for the Cats.

Ultimately retiring 4 short of the ever ellusive 800 milestone.
