Most Venues An AFL Player Has Played At

05/05/2025|SB Staff|AFL News

Which AFL player has played the most at the most AFL venues?

The AFL has spread and grown across every corner of Australia, both with expansion into new markets with new teams and with ambitions to grow the game across the country. Even in the stadium era where AFL games are big events, held in the biggest venues available.

On some occasions, they have even taken home-and-away games abroad and contested games for premiership points overseas.

In 2025, Games will be played in the Barossa Valley and Bunbury for the first time for premiership points, taking the number of venues to have hosted official VFL/AFL games to 51.

So, who has played AFL games on the most venues? Let’s find out.

Most AFL Venues Played AT

AFL Players Playing at 22 Venues

David Swallow

The inaugural Sun is the AFL’s “I’ve been everywhere” man.

In 2024, when the Suns played in Mt Barker, it became Swallow’s 22nd different venue he had played a game in, breaking the then record of 21 held by his ex-teammate Jack Hombsch.

Plenty of his Suns teammates will feature in this list as a product and a result of the AFL trying to find markets for one of their newest teams to get a foothold in.

He has graced the surfaces on all the major stadiums in Australia but has also been to all different corners of Australia including Far North Queensland (Cairns & Townsville), Tasmania (Hobart & Launceston) Inner South Australia (Norwood & Mount Barker), Ballarat, Alice Springs, Darwin and even overseas, partaking in multiple games at Jiangwan Stadium in Shanghai, China

AFL Players Playing at 21 Venues

Jack Hombsch

The inaugural Giant played at both the AFL’s expansion clubs over his 116-game career. For a long time, he was the custodian of this record before Swallow usurped him in 2024.

Hombsch only played one year at the Giants- their inaugural year, but that was the year the Giants had four home grounds while the Showgrounds was getting redeveloped.

The Giants hosted games at Stadium Australia, Blacktown and Manuka Oval in Canberra before settling into their home ground at Sydney Showgrounds.

Upon moving to Port Adelaide, Hombsch played in the final season that Footy Park was used as an AFL venue and then later called Adelaide Oval home. Being a Port player, he also played games in China on two occasions.

He added his final unique venue in his last year as a player when he was playing for the Suns in 2019 when they hosted a game against St Kilda at Riverway Stadium in Townsville.

AFL Players Playing at 20 Venues

Callan Ward, Toby Greene, Stephen Coniglio, Lachie Neale, Alex Sexton, Seb Ross, Jarrod Witts, Touk Miller, Nick Holman

Lachie Neale and Seb Ross are the outliers here in a group of players who have played for expansion clubs.

Starting his career at the Dockers, Neale played plenty of games at Subiaco Oval. By virtue of playing for non-Victorian clubs, his teams have also trotted around the country a fair bit. Which means that Neale has taken in all the major stadiums, but also grounds closer to his hometown in South Australia in Mt Barker and Norwood Oval.

One of the tribulations of being from a smaller Victorian club is not only do you get sent around the place a fair bit, but you also have to deal with your club selling home games.

Seb Ross has taken in all the major grounds, but has also stepped foot in Cairns, Townsville, Alice Springs and Norwood Oval.

Ross is also among a select group of players to have played an AFL league game in multiple countries, having participated in matches held in Shanghai, China and Wellington, New Zealand.

AFL Players Playing at 19 Venues

Paul Salmon, Robert Harvey, Jarrod Harbrow, Robbie Gray, Tom Jonas, Brandon Ellis, Chad Wingard, Bradley Hill, Jarryd Lyons, Sean Lemmens, Tim Membrey, Jesse Hogan, Jack Sinclair.

Paul Salmon and Robert Harvey are probably my favourite entries on this list because they played across both the suburban grounds and big stadium era.

Beginning his career in the early 1980s, Salmon played at football clubs’ spiritual homes such as Arden St, Junction Oval, Princes Park, Victoria Park, the Western Oval, Moorabbin, and his home ground at Windy Hill.

Later in his career, Salmon took in the big Victorian grounds in Docklands, Waverley and the MCG, along with the main grounds in each state at the time, such as Footy Park, the WACA, Subiaco, North Hobart Oval, The Gabba, Carrara and the SCG.

Tim Membrey, Like his former teammate Seb Ross is one of only a handful of players to have played a game of AFL football in three different countries

AFL Players Playing at 18 Venues

Gavin Wanganeen, Stephen Paxman, Doug Hawkins, Nathan Burke, Anthony Daniher, Gary Ayres, Eddie Betts, Bryce Gibbs + 38 other players

A mix of players here from the suburban ground era and the stadium era.

The one to focus on in this group is Stephen Paxman.

The defender began his career at Fitzroy, in a time when the Roys were on their last legs.

They didn’t have a regular home and were bouncing around Melbourne playing games at different home grounds.

So displaced and desperate for a home venue Fitzroy were at the time, Paxman played in a game where Fitzroy hosted West Coast at Bruce Stadium in Canberra. Yes, the rectangular Stadium in Canberra, home of the Raiders and Brumbies.

Paxman joined Port Adelaide for their inaugural year in the competition and jumped around the country as the Power joined the national competition circuit.

So there you have it.
