Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski is one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time and one of Australia’s most famous sporting icons.

He is the former UFC’s Featherweight Champion and held that title from 2019 (when he first defeated Max Holloway at UFC 245) until 2024.

During this tenure he also unsuccessfully challenged Islam Makhachev for the UFC’s Lightweight Championship on two separate occasions.

He has an MMA record of 26-4-0, 26 wins, 4 losses and 0 draws. Before the UFC he fought in and was champion of the Australian Fighting Championship (AFC) Featherweight division.

Volkanovski grew up playing Rugby League in New South Wales before moving into fighting. He is of Macedonian and Greek descent.

He is currently the #3 pound-for-pound male fighter in the UFC, but before becoming one of the best fighters on the planet, did you know Volkanovski worked as a concreter?

That’s one way to ensure you stay grounded even when you’re scaling the lofty heights of the MMA world.

Volk has never turned his back on his Aussie roots and still fights out of the Freestyle Fighting Gym in Wollongong.

Volkanovski has participated in many classic UFC bouts, but arguably his most famous series of fights was the trilogy between himself and Max Holloway.

He first faced Holloway for the UFC Featherweight Championship at UFC 245 at the end of 2019. He defeated the American via unanimous decision to claim his first UFC title.

Volk successfully defend his belt against Holloway on two separate occasions, at UFC 251 and 276 respectively.

In between his second and third fight with Holloway, the Great also faced and defeated both Brian Ortega and the Korean Zombie Chan Sung Jung.

He also defeated interim Featherweight champion Yair Rodriguez in a unification title bout after his first defeat to Islam Makhachev.

Alexander Volkanovski is widely regarded as one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time and has previously held the #1 pound-for-pound ranking in the UFC.
