Zverev vs Halys Prediction and Betting Odds

Zverev vs Halys Prediction and Betting Odds

Alexander Zverev was pushed right to the limits in his first-round US Open match, so he will be hoping to have a much cleaner round when he takes on Quentin Halys in the second round.

Zverev needed five sets, while Hayls needed four to overcome their respective first round opponents and will now look to push on in New York when they face each other next (time and date TBD).

Quick Picks

Our pick: Zverev to win

Value bet: Halys handicap

Long shot: Zverev 3-1 in set betting

Betting Preview

Despite being among the favourites to win, German Zverev was taken to a fifth set in something of an epic in his opening round match in New York. Taking on Italian Lorenzo Sonego, the German was battling the elements as well as his opponent on the court.

Rain wreaked havoc on the Flushing meadow schedule, but Zverev survived a huge upset and the ignominy Novak Djokovic suffered when he crashed out of this year’s final major.

Taking the first set, Zverev found himself two sets down and facing the real possibility of an exit. He rallied back and took the final two sets to win 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5, 6-4.

Halys doesn’t have a great record at the US Open. In the four previous times he has appeared at the event, the Frenchman has lost without winning a match. This time around, he managed to go one better, but he was made to work for it by Facundo Diaz Acosta. Halys, whose career highest world ranking is 46, needed a fourth set to win his match, recording a 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (9-7), 6-1 victory.

He had to hold his nerve on many occasions, not least when he too was impacted by the rain. A 40-minute delay threatened to derail the progress he had made and make life more challenging than New York had already proved for him.

Betting Markets to Watch

The latest US Open tennis odds have Zverev as the clear favourite to win this encounter, and it’s not all that surprising. Indeed, Zverev has won each of his last 13 Grand Slam second round matches, while he is also aiming to reach his first Grand Slam final on the bounce.

However, this means the line is quite short for the German in the moneyline, so you’ll need to look elsewhere for value.

The ‘Alexander Zverev - To Win 1st Set’ market appears to have some value. Although only slightly greater in value compared to him winning, Zverev has won the first set in each of his last 24 ATP main draw matches against right-handed opponents, and it’s likely he will want to make a fast start in his second round match to prove he’s back firing on all cylinders.

The handicap for Halys has some value worth exploring at a slightly higher price. Zverev has failed to cover the game handicap in each of his last six ATP main draw matches. If you are weighing up moneyline, handicap and set betting angles, our guide to US Open betting breaks down how each of these markets works.

Our Prediction

You can check out the latest Alexander Zverev vs Quentin Halys betting odds at Sportsbet.

Our prediction is that Zverev is the likely winner of the match.

For a higher price, the ‘ Alexander Zverev 3-1’ in set betting looks as though it has something to offer. Although Halys doesn’t have the best record in New York (or arguably USA), their last meeting in a major saw the German win by this scoreline earlier this year at the French Open.

Of course, the court is different, but the Frenchman will have some added confidence after winning his first match, while Zverev looked far from his best in his first round match.
