Despite being among the favourites to win, German Zverev was taken to a fifth set in something of an epic in his opening round match in New York. Taking on Italian Lorenzo Sonego, the German was battling the elements as well as his opponent on the court.

This time around, he managed to go one better, but he was made to work for it by Facundo Diaz Acosta. Halys, whose career highest world ranking is 46, needed a fourth set to win his match, recording a 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (9-7), 6-1 victory.

He had to hold his nerve on many occasions, not least when he too was impacted by the rain. A 40-minute delay threatened to derail the progress he had made and make life more challenging than New York had already proved for him.
