The FA Community Shield will be played on Monday (00:00 AEST) at Wembley Stadium and will see Liverpool take on Crystal Palace in one of English soccer’s traditions.

Although some have billed the game as nothing more than an exhibition, it’s for a trophy as the winners of the Premier League take on the winners of the FA Cup.

We’ve provided a thorough run-through of the upcoming game, identifying potential betting angles to try and exploit for additional value before the two teams take to the pitch…

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace Betting Preview

Liverpool will be entering their fourth Community Shield in seven years. They lost on penalties in both 2019 (v Man City) and 2020 (v Arsenal), before beating Man City 3-1 in 2022. The fourth appearance will be as many as they managed in the 28 years before the last seven.

For Crystal Palace, it will be their first-ever appearance in the Community Shield – and history doesn’t read well for their chances. Of the last four teams to have played in their maiden game, none have won. Two were played against Liverpool (Southampton 1976; Wimbledon 1988).

Still, the Eagles can enter the game with hope, as Liverpool have only ever won the Community Shield as Premier League title holders once (1988, when they beat Wimbledon 2-1).

However, Crystal Palace have won just one of their last 16 meetings with Liverpool in all competitions (D3 L12), picking up a 1-0 win at Anfield in the Premier League in April 2024. The London outfit does have a strong record at Wembley, winning four of their six matches (losses to Man Utd and Chelsea).

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace Betting Predictions

The latest Liverpool vs Crystal Palace betting odds have the Premier League champions as big opening favourites to win the game. Those who believe in history might want to consider backing the underdogs, given the Reds’ struggles to win the Community Shield as league champions, but we can’t see that here.

In the anytime goalscorer market, Eberechi Eze (if he remains and hasn’t moved to Arsenal, where rumours suggest he could be going) has been involved in 12 goals in his last 13 games for Crystal Palace in all competitions (9 goals, 3 assists). He could provide value for punters.

Mohamed Salah is another, as he registered 57 goals (34) and assists (23) in 52 games in all competitions last season. However, he has failed to register one in his last seven Wembley appearances, so more value may be found by tipping Hugo Ekitike to score.

The ‘Over’ the ‘Total Goals 2.5’ market could also be worth value. While both teams possess quality in defence, both can be attack-minded. Arne Slot and Oliver Glasner may be aiming to keep their teams rigid ahead of the upcoming EPL season, but we predict goals here.
