atletico madrid vs real madrid

One of the most highly anticipated clashes of the La Liga season, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid will clash on Monday, September 21, with kick-off at 00:15 AEST.

The result of the game could be impactful at the top of the table, despite it being only the seventh match of the season in this year’s league competition.

Let’s take a look at what could be in store…

With kick-off in the early hours locally, it is worth sorting out how to watch La Liga in Australia before this one gets underway.

Quick Picks

Our pick: Draw

Value bet: Atletico And Draw

Long shot: 1-1 correct score

Betting Preview

Jose Mourinho has had a positive start to his second spell as the Los Blancos boss, winning five of his first six La Liga matches. But despite that impressive looking record on paper, there is some suggestion that he hasn’t got his squad firing as he would want.

Real Madrid certainly haven’t dominated games in the way that he and the fans may have initially expected or wanted this season.

While three points against Elche was expected, they made hard work of it. In fact, it took a last-gasp effort from new signing Carlos Espi to get the three points, having initially been 2-0 up before conceding twice late on in the second half.

There have been other occasions this season where the title challengers have left it late, with Espi doing the same in the opening game of the season to record a 2-1 victory over Espanyol.

Atletico Madrid are likely to be Real’s strongest test of the season, and have been under Diego Simeone's guidance since 2011. The second-longest tenured coach in European soccer has seen his side start in their typical fashion, picking up points and keeping themselves within range of the top clubs.

Los Rojiblancos bounced back from a 3-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao with a 3-0 victory of their own against Real Sociedad before taking on Osasuna on Thursday. The saga surrounding striker Julian Alvarez continues, though, as he has been unavailable due to illness amid his desire to join current La Liga table-toppers Barcelona.

Betting Markets to Watch

The Spanish La Liga betting odds have Real Madrid as favourites to win, but there may be better value in the draw here. The Los Rojiblancos have had a strong start at home this season and have a decent H2H record against Real Madrid.

Of the last five matches, there have been three draws, while the last time Atletico hosted, they won 5-2 during the ill-fated reign of now Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso.

With that in mind, we think there’s value in the ‘Atletico Madrid And Draw’ market in the ‘Double Chance’, particularly as Mourinho’s side have found it challenging to close out games on occasions this season.

While the two most recent La Liga fixtures have featured goals (13 combined), the three draws all ended 1-1. As such, we think there’s good value in the ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ market hitting here, as both will look to keep things tight.

Although neither has had too much trouble scoring, it’s a completely different game to any that has been played so far this season. The BTTS hitting has value, though.
