For Australian fans who follow the Premier League through the small hours, few names carry the electric charge of Victor Osimhen.
Now the Nigerian striker has surfaced in one of the more unexpected sagas of the window, with reports suggesting Arsenal have quietly opened talks with Galatasaray about a possible move for the forward.
The chatter around Victor Osimhen Arsenal talks has since taken on a life of its own.
The twist is that Osimhen's name did not appear because Arsenal set out to sign him.
According to reports, the discussion emerged almost by accident, spinning out of separate negotiations over two of Mikel Arteta's own players, leaving the market to guess how serious it truly is.
How the Victor Osimhen Arsenal Talks Began
The catalyst, as often happens, was frustration elsewhere. Arsenal had reportedly made Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez their priority target, but Atletico's €500 million release clause and refusal to negotiate below €100 million-plus valuations proved prohibitive.
With that path blocked, according to The Telegraph, the Gunners turned to conversations already underway with Galatasaray and found a new avenue opening up.
Those talks were never meant to be about Osimhen at all. They reportedly began with the Turkish champions circling two Arsenal players, and it was only during the back and forth that the idea of a reunion with English football for the Nigerian was floated.
Whether it becomes anything more concrete remains genuinely uncertain.
It helps to remember how Osimhen ended up in Istanbul in the first place.
After a long standoff with Napoli, he joined Galatasaray on loan in September 2024, with the Turkish club making the move permanent in July 2025 in a deal worth close to €75 million, roughly A$131 million, becoming the costliest arrival in Turkish football history.
That price tag matters, because it hints at how much any English club would now need to prise him loose. Osimhen has thrived leading the Galatasaray line, yet the pull of Champions League nights, according to those close to him, has never quite faded.
Why Martinelli and Nwaneri Are Involved
The mechanics of the Arsenal-Galatasaray discussions centre on two players moving the other way.
The Athletic, part of The New York Times, has reported that Galatasaray offered Arsenal around €45 million, or roughly A$79 million, for winger Gabriel Martinelli, a sum the Brazilian is said to be weighing carefully.
Reports suggest Martinelli is hesitant about swapping the Premier League for Turkey's Super Lig, which complicates the deal. For context, €45 million would be an enormous outlay by Turkish standards, with only the Osimhen transfer itself having cost a Super Lig club more.
Running alongside that is the future of teenage midfielder Ethan Nwaneri.
Arsenal are understood to have offered the 19-year-old to Galatasaray for around €40 million, about A$70 million, and reports indicate the Turkish side are now pushing to get that agreement over the line.
John Obi Mikel Backs Osimhen to Arsenal
The idea of Osimhen at the Emirates has a notable cheerleader in former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel.
The Nigerian, who was involved in Chelsea's unsuccessful pursuit of his compatriot back in 2024, believes his countryman is desperate to test himself at Europe's summit.
"I think we want to see him in the Champions League so maybe Arsenal might be the destination," Mikel said, hinting that a path could open up in north London.
He added that he had spoken with the striker directly, without revealing much detail, while insisting Osimhen is working toward a top European league where he can chase the biggest prizes.
There is a certain irony in all this, given Arsenal reportedly passed on signing Osimhen back in 2024 when Napoli's asking price looked too steep.
For now, Galatasaray appear focused on finalising the Nwaneri move while Martinelli mulls his options, and Arsenal face a clear decision point on the Victor Osimhen Arsenal talks before the window shuts.
