If Australia wants to go on a run at the 2026 World Cup we’re going to need to win games. If we want to win games, we’re going to need to score goals. If we’re going to score goals, one or more of the players listed below are going to have to stand up and be counted.
We’ve crunched the numbers, reviewed the odds and examined the form guides of the most eligible Aussies for the honour of being our top goalscorer at the 2026 World Cup.
Game time, position, set piece duties and of course an existing eye for goal, all come in to play here.
While none of these players are tipped to feature in the overall Golden Boot race for the entire tournament, it may only take two or three goals to be Australia’s top scorer at these World Cup finals.
So, with that in mind, join us as we attempt to answer the question – who will score the most goals at the World Cup for Australia?
Who Will Score the Most Goals at the World Cup for Australia?
The Favourites
Mohamed Toure
Joint favourite for top Aussie goalscorer honours at the time of writing, Toure has the pace and predatory instincts to lead the line and is rated as likely to net as anyone in Green and Gold.
He’s had plenty of practice scoring goals while wearing Green and Gold (well yellow, but close enough) since joining Norwich FC in the Championship earlier this year.
Toure has scored 12 goals in 12 appearances for The Canaries across all competitions since joining the club in January, including two hat-tricks.
Nestory Irankunda
Sharing favouritism in this market with his fellow EFL Championship member Mo Toure, is Watford’s Nestory Irankunda.
The young winger is one of Australian football's most exciting prospects and his ability to score from range makes him a constant goal threat.
Of Watford’s 10 Goal of the Season contenders this year, Irankunda scored four of them. Which is more than enough evidence to make him a favourite here but also means he could be worth a look in the Goal of the Tournament market too.
Cristian Volpato
Despite having never scored or even played for Australia, as he only just pledged allegiance to the Green and Gold, Cristian Volpato is the current third favourite to be Australia’s top goalscorer at the 2026 World Cup.
The creative attacking midfielder does offer value as he has an eye for goal from open play or a clever set-piece finish and looks set to start in an advanced attacking position.
Jordan Bos
A defender is one of the favourites to be Australia’s top goalscorer at the 2026 World Cup!?
Yep. Jordy Bos is a marauding full-back who is really a winger in disguise and is well-priced given his attacking instincts and willingness to push high up the park.
The definition of a buccaneering left-back, Popovic’s wing-back system should allow Bos to push up the field and bomb into the box late, as well as having a few pops at goal from range.
Mathew Leckie
One of the riskier picks due to his time away from the national team due to injury, regardless of recent minutes Mathew Leckie is a terminal goal threat.
Experience matters in this market, and Leckie's quote reflects his ability to pop up with a clutch finish when it counts. Remember the last World Cup? Because Denmark do.
Under the Radar Options
No Australian Goalscorer
That’s a funny sounding player. An option here for the unpatriotic among us, backing no Australian to score is a legitimate option if you're expecting our boys to get bundled out without so much as firing a shot.
Awer Mabil
Recently recalled Mabil's set-piece prowess and pace once released in behind defenders keep him firmly in calculations here, although game time might be his biggest roadblock.
Harry Souttar
Another defender amongst the strikers and in our opinion the best value play of all the Aussies, gargantuan centre-back Harry Souttar supportingly has quite the eye for goal.
The towering defender is a genuine aerial weapon from corners, scoring on his Australian debut and scoring on his return for Leicester City after over 12 months on the sidelines.
With the likes of Bos providing the ammo from out wide, there’s no reason why big bad Harry can’t head in more than a few goals later this month.
Tete Yengi
Rounding out the under the radar options is the uncapped Tete Yengi. An unproven quantity at international level, Yengi does offer a tempting price for those wanting a bit more bang for their buck and is an out and out centre forward.
