Record Herrington Hull Deal Close 

Teenage centre-back Lucas Herrington, who became the youngest Australian to start a men’s World Cup fixture during his nation’s campaign in North America, is set to join newly-promoted Hull City in a deal reportedly worth around $24.1m plus $8.4m in add-ons.

That total of roughly $32.5m would make Herrington the most expensive Australian footballer of all time.

It would also smash Hull’s own club-record signing fee, eclipsing the $19m they forked out for Ryan Mason more than a decade ago, and sets a new selling high for Herrington’s current club, Colorado Rapids.

Barcelona and Liverpool were both linked with Herrington earlier in the year, and while the MKM Stadium isn’t quite Camp Nou or Anfield, the move to Hull ticks the most important box: regular senior minutes in one of Europe’s big five leagues. 

At just 18, Herrington should finish the season battle-hardened, still a teenager, and if his trajectory is anything to go by will be advancing up the football pyramid in no time. 

Spare a thought for Brisbane Roar, mind you. The A-League Men’s club reportedly sold their sell-on clause back to Colorado for around $560,000.

A decision that (if the deal goes through) just cost them a minimum $4.8m windfall less than a year on from Herrington’s departure. Ouch.

Italian Giants Lining up for Circati 

22-year-old Alessandro Circati has gone from promising Serie A defender to genuine hot property after a commanding World Cup campaign for Australia. 

Juventus and AC Milan have both made contact with Parma, but the Italian side aren't letting their vice-captain leave cheaply — they've slapped a $41.1m price tag on him.

If that fee is met, it would smash the Australian transfer record set by Harry Souttar's $25m move to Leicester City after the 2022 World Cup. 

That record, mind you, is already on borrowed time, as previously mentioned 18-year-old Lucas Herrington is reportedly on the verge of a $32.5 million move from Colorado Rapids to newly promoted Hull.

Circati was also linked with Atletico Madrid, Newcastle and Champions League back-to-back winners Paris Saint-Germain during the tournament. 

His father and co-agent Gianfranco confirmed the market is "buzzing", though with a contract until 2029, there's no rush.

Done Deals for Okon-Engstler and Beach

Herrington and Circati are far from alone. Of the eight players aged 23 or under who started a match for Tony Popovic’s side in North America, several have already parlayed their tournament form into major moves.

Paul Okon-Engstler has jumped straight from Sydney FC to Bundesliga side FC Köln, while breakout goalkeeper Patrick Beach has completed a City Football Group switch from Melbourne City to newly promoted Ligue 1 outfit Troyes. 

Both are tipped to see meaningful minutes based on pre-season, a rarity given the last A-League Men graduates to walk straight into regular football in Europe’s top five leagues were Vince Grella and Stan Lazaridis, back in the NSL era.

Elsewhere, Champions League-bound Sporting CP are reportedly closing in on Nestory Irankunda in a deal that could also eclipse Souttar’s benchmark, while Premier League clubs were circling Jordy Bos before injury against Egypt forced him under the knife.

The transfer market may no longer treat the World Cup as a one-stop shop, but for this crop of Aussies, a strong tournament has translated into serious upward mobility. 

With the likes of Herrington and Circati leading the charge, the pipeline of Australian talent hitting Europe’s biggest stages has never looked healthier.
