South Africa and co-hosts Canada will face each other in the Round of 32 on Monday (05.00 AEST) after both nations reached the knockout stages of the competition for the first time.
Hugo Broos’ South Africa reached this stage after recording an impressive 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final group game, meaning they finished second in Group A.
Jesse Marsch’s men, meanwhile, finished second in Group B despite losing to the group winners, Switzerland, in their final contest.
To celebrate the momentous occasion that is the World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!
How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.
For example, if you’ve bet on Kylian Mbappe to score during one of France’s matches and during that match he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Jean-Philippe Mateta who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Mbappe is paid as a winner!
Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.
Quick Picks
Our pick: Canada to win
Value bet: Over 2.5 Goals
Long shot: Canada to win 2-1
South Africa vs Canada prediction
When looking at the moneyline odds for this upcoming clash, Canada have been made the moderate favourites. The game is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, but the Canadians will feel they’ll have the backing of home support as one of the co-hosts, which could play into their favour.
They arguably have the better quality and level of players on paper, although the Bafana Bafana are likely to make things difficult, just as they did against a South Korea team that many would have suggested were better than them on paper.
Both shared identical records in the Group Stage, winning one, drawing one, and losing one, which could point to a potentially tight clash.
Still, with home advantage and the quality that Canada has, with many of their players playing in top European soccer leagues, we think they are the most likely to win and advance to the Round of 16.
South Africa vs Canada score prediction
On paper, this game looks like it could be a tight contest, which is perhaps why the odds are favouring the ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ market. However, we think there could be value in the over.
Although South Africa never had a game go over this total, Canada saw it hit on two of the three matches played.
This included their 6-0 win against Qatar and the 2-1 defeat to Switzerland. South Africa tightened up in their games following the opening fixture against Mexico, in which they lost 2-0 and had two players red-carded.
While both defences will need to be on top form, we’ve seen pressure get to back lines before (just look at the mistakes Scotland made against Brazil, for example). Remember, neither nation has been in this position before. That could create mistakes, and goals being scored.
We think this also means that the BTTS hitting offers value worth exploring. It hit twice in Canada’s three games, but just once in South Africa’s. Still, with everything on the line in this one, we think there’s a good chance of it hitting.
Our score prediction is Canada 2-1…
Player markets to watch
Canada’s Jonathan David and Cyle Larin have played well throughout the Group Stage, with both getting on the scoresheet. Juventus hitman David notched a hat-trick against Qatar, while Larin scored in back-to-back games against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Qatar.
We think Marsch’s side will look to use these two attackers to their advantage once again when they play against the Bafana Bafana, with both offering good value as anytime goalscorers.
For South Africa, Iqraam Rayners offers the most likely value to be an anytime goalscorer, although it depends on who Broos decides to start. The coach has rotated so far, but Rayners gets minutes more often than not.
If you are looking for some outside value, take a look at Teboho Mokoena and Thapelo Maseko, as these are the two players to have scored Bafana’s only goals so far.
