Mexico vs Ecuador Prediction - World Cup Round of 32
30/06/2026|SB Staff|World Cup 2026 Tips & Predictions
Co-hosts Mexico will take on Ecuador in a Round of 32 match, being Match 79 of this year’s competition. The game will take place on Wednesday, July 1, with kick-off at 11:00 AEST.
The Mexicans have had a hugely positive tournament so far, but there’ll be plenty of expectation placed on them by a native support.
They finished as winners of Group A with a 100% record (one of just three teams to do so), while the South Americans finished third in Group E after an important win against Germany.
To celebrate the momentous occasion that is the World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!
How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.
For example, if you’ve bet on Kylian Mbappe to score during one of France’s matches and during that match he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Jean-Philippe Mateta who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Mbappe is paid as a winner!
Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.
Quick Picks
Our pick: Ecuador to win
Value bet: Under 2.5 Goals
Long shot: Ecuador to win 2-1 in extra time.
Mexico vs Ecuador prediction
Scheduled to be played in Mexico City, the co-hosts have been made favourites to win the encounter in the pre-match moneyline odds. As the Mexico vs Ecuador betting suggest, they were statistically one of the best 48 teams in this year’s competition during the Group Phase, with just France and Argentina matching them with three wins from three.
Of course, home advantage is likely to be a factor in the odds that they have been provided. That could play a significant role against Ecuador, who are yet to have played in the country, having being based across the US so far.
That said, it could also play into their hands slightly, as the climate will be closer to what they would be used to at home.
And Mexico have a pretty shocking history in the knockout phases. The country has lost eight of nine of their first matches in the knockout stage.
Incredibly, in 14 World Cup matches against South American sides, Mexico have only won once.
Could the weight of expectation and history prove too much for the Mexicans. We’re bucking the trend and going for an Ecuador win, although don’t be surprised if that’s in extra time.
Mexico vs Ecuador score prediction
This game is likely to be tight, with both nations being rather defensive and can often look to operate on the counter. Two of the last three meetings between these sides have ended in draws.
Javier Aguirre’s Mexico have had to be patient in their games, and have had to wait to pick their opponents off. There is likely to be something similar experienced when they take on Sebastián Beccacece’s side, as they’ve conceded just two goals so far.
Ecuador, though, have scored just two times, while Mexico netted six without conceding. So it’s a little uncertain where the goals market is likely to sit.
Ecuador have struggled to find the net despite being offered numerous chances in games. But they will have huge confidence after beating Germany 2-1 in their last group game, and will want to try to silence what is expected to be a rowdy Mexican crowd.
That’s why we think a 2-1 Ecuador win is the most likely outcome.

Mexico vs Ecuador team news and line-ups
Predicted Mexico line-up (4-1-4-1): Raúl Rangel, Jorge Sánchez, Edson Álvarez, Johan Vásquez, Jesús Gallardo, Érik Lira, Roberto Alvarado, Álvaro Fidalgo, Brian Gutiérrez, Julián Quiñones, Raul Jiménez.
The hosts kept consecutive clean sheets to top Group A with maximum points and will lean on their settled defensive base in front of a packed home crowd. Raul Jiménez returns from suspension.
Predicted Ecuador line-up (4-4-2): Hernán Galindez, Alan Franco, Joel Ordóñez, Willian Pacho, Piero Hincapié, John Yeboah, Moisés Caicedo, Pedro Vite, Nilson Angulo, Gonzalo Plata, Enner Valencia.
Sebastian Beccacece is expected to keep faith with the side that came from behind to beat Germany, with the South Americans conceding sparingly across the group stage but struggling to convert their chances.
Player markets to watch
Julian Quinones offers value in the anytime goalscorer market for the Mexicans, having netted twice in the group phase. He scored the first in the opening game against South Africa before netting the second of three against Czechia in the final game.
He has good value in the anytime market, but worth exploring in the first goalscorer option. He had three shots against Czechia, four against South Africa, and one against South Korea before being subbed.
Raul Jimenez remains a threat, despite only scoring once so far. He didn’t feature against Czechia but led the line in the other two games. His numbers for his country suggest his value is worth exploring as an anytime goalscorer, despite being in a poor stretch.
In the ‘Assists’ market, Ecuador’s Pedro Vita is worth examining. He produced the most number of defence splitting passes which led to a shot (nine) in the group stages.
