The Group E opener between Ivory Coast and Ecuador at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia shapes as one of the more intriguing clashes of the first round.
Neither side has faced the other in any competition, ever. Both arrive in genuine form, and both have defensive records that suggest this won't be a goal-fest.
Ivory Coast stunned France 2-1 in a friendly just days before the tournament, with Guela Doue and Amad Diallo getting on the scoresheet.
They also went unbeaten through all 10 African qualifiers - eight wins and two draws - without conceding a single goal. The Elephants are no pushovers.
Ecuador, though, are a different beast entirely. La Tri finished second in CONMEBOL qualifying, kept 13 clean sheets in 18 matches, and conceded just five goals across the entire campaign.
That is half the tally of Argentina, who finished top. They arrive on a 19-match unbeaten run stretching back to September 2024, and boast a genuine world-class spine through Willian Pacho and Moises Caicedo.
To celebrate the momentous occasion that is the World Cup, Sportsbet is bringing back its exclusive Super Sub feature!
How does Super Sub work? Well, it’s very simple. Place a bet on select player markets throughout the 2026 Men’s World Cup and if that player is subbed off your bet rolls over to the new player that replaced them.
For example, if you’ve bet on Kylian Mbappe to score during one of France’s matches and during that match he fails to do so and is directly substituted for Jean-Philippe Mateta who ends up scoring instead, your original bet on Mbappe is paid as a winner!
Super Sub is not exclusive to goalscoring markets either, it also applies to anytime assist, player to win one or more fouls, shots on target and more, just make sure to read all the T&Cs before locking in your bet.
Ivory Coast vs Ecuador prediction
We're tipping the draw here, and we like it paired with under 2.5 goals.
Ecuador's defensive organisation is elite. Coach Sebastian Beccacece has built a unit that shut out Argentina in qualifying and frustrated the Netherlands and Morocco in recent friendlies.
Ivory Coast have the attacking talent to hurt anyone, but they haven't come up against a backline this well-drilled in a long time.
Flip it around and the Elephants aren't easy to break down either. Ten qualifying matches without conceding tells its own story, and coach Emerse Fae will set his side up to be compact and hard to beat in a World Cup opener where a loss would be catastrophic.
Both managers will approach this one with caution. Opening group games are often cagey, low-scoring affairs, and neither side can afford to chase the match and get caught on the counter. Ecuador's qualifying record screams low-scoring, disciplined football.
Four of their last six matches produced under 2.5 goals, and Ivory Coast's physical, well-organised midfield should ensure the tempo stays controlled.
The most likely result looks like a 1-1 draw. Ivory Coast have scored in each of their last nine internationals and have enough quality through Doue and Diallo to find the net at least once.
Ecuador, meanwhile, have scored in five straight matches coming into the tournament. But neither side has the motivation or the profile to throw bodies forward recklessly in a first-up World Cup match.
Expect a cagey, tightly contested affair that stays under 2.5 goals.
Player markets to watch
Our pick: Amad Diallo to score anytime.
The Manchester United winger scored against France in Ivory Coast's final warm-up match and starred at AFCON earlier this year, scoring and assisting in the 3-0 last-16 win over Burkina Faso.
He's direct, loves cutting inside onto his left foot, and carries genuine goal threat at international level. If the Elephants are going to score, the ball is likely coming through Diallo at some point.
Our pick: Guela Doue to score anytime.
The Strasbourg right-back also found the net in that 2-1 win over France, and scored in the AFCON quarter-final against Egypt, showing his knack for arriving in dangerous positions from deep.
Despite being a defender by trade, Doue carries a threat on overlapping runs and set pieces, and is hungry to make an impression on the biggest stage.
Worth a look at our Ivory Coast vs Ecuador page for all markets - including those with longer odds in the anytime scorer market.
Our pick: Moises Caicedo to score anytime.
Ecuador's midfield general is one of the best midfielders in world football. He came off the bench at half-time in the 3-0 friendly win over Guatemala, with coach Beccacece managing his minutes ahead of the tournament.
Caicedo regularly drives forward from deep and has added goals to his arsenal this season. He could be the difference in a tight contest.
