What are the Odds of Australia Winning the World Cup?

28/05/2026|SB Staff|Australia

The Men’s 2026 World Cup is mere weeks away, and after four years of anticipation, everyone Down Under is gearing up to cheer on our Aussies.

For some punters out there, they’ll be doing more than cheering, they’ll be backing Australia to do what many see as the unthinkable and going all the way and winning the 2026 World Cup.

At the time of writing, before a ball has been kicked at the World Cup, Australia are paying 501.00*, also known as 501/1.

This means every dollar bet on Australia to win the World Cup will return five hundred and one dollars.

To put that into perspective, the current favourites (at the time of writing) in Sportsbet’s World Cup Outright Winner market Spain, are paying 5.50 to win.

That means they are perceived to be nearly 100 times more likely to lift the trophy than Australia. Which seems a little harsh in our opinion.

This current crop of Green and Gold representatives are being heralded as the ‘Golden Generation 2.0’ after all.

Does that mean there is value to be had in backing Australia all the way? Well not necessarily, but to put things into perspective here are some other unlikely outcomes currently paying less, so you can see exactly what Australia’s odds are of winning the World Cup.

What are the Odds of Australia Winning the World Cup Compared to..

Robert Irwin to Win the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize – 51.00*

We love Robert Irwin as much as they next guy but seeing as last year’s Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Maria Corina Machado for “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy” surely our guy Bob doesn’t fit the criteria.

That being said, mathematically he is 10 times more likely to win the Nobel Peace Prize than Australia is to win the World Cup this year.

Aura-Farming to be Merriam Webster’s Word of the Year – 11.00*

Are we really going to live in a world where “aura-farming” is the word of the year? Well, apparently it is far more likely that we will as opposed to living in a world where Australia are World Champions. No cap.

Canberra to be Named 2027’s Best City in the World – 41.00*

New York, London, Tokyo, Canberra? Sounds outrageous, doesn’t it? Well, nowhere near as outrageous as Australia winning the World Cup apparently.

Nestory Irankunda to Win Goal of the Tournament at the 2026 World Cup – 101.00*

This is how underrated Australia and our players are heading into the 2026 World Cup. Despite scoring four of Watford’s 10 Goal of the Season nominations this season, Australia’s Nestory Irankunda is a whopping 101.00 to take out Goal of the Tournament at the World Cup.

Pretty crazy when you consider the man only scores bangers and it just takes one moment of magic to score a goalazo.

Karl Stefanovic to be the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games Mascot – 101.00*

Is it really five times more likely that Karl Stefanovic will be the mascot for the 2032 Olympic Games than it is for Australia to win the World Cup? Apparently so!
