Not only is Group D at the 2026 World Cup easily the most open and therefore the hardest to predict, but it will also be the home of our Aussies for the opening stages of the tournament.
For once we haven’t been drawn alongside a true footballing superpower (cough France cough) in the group stages, but the flip side of the coin is that there are no minnows in sight here.
Instead, we must face three other sides with genuine ambition of advancement, meaning every match will be a true battle of resilience and tactical acumen.
Group D is a bubbling concoction of host nation pressure, long standing World Cup exiles finally coming to an end and a defiant bunch of Green and Gold underdogs.

World Cup Group D Teams
Australia
Australia are set to partake in their sixth straight World Cup, but we do so in transition.
Tony Popovic, a member of the 2006 squad that reached the last 16, steadied a wobbling qualification campaign and steered the side to direct qualification. His 26-man group features 17 World Cup debutants, with veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan and forwards Jackson Irvine and Mathew Leckie providing the experience.
Nestory Irankunda, Mo Toure and Jordy Bos are the excitement machines that are capable of lighting up games in our favour and represent a new, attacking-based brand of Australian football.
The biggest concern for Popovic however is the loss of midfielder Riley McGree to a hamstring injury, which is a real blow to our central balance.
Still though, Italian ex-pat Cristian Volpato should plug that hole nicely and round out what is no doubt, the most exciting Aussie side since 2006.
USA
As co-hosts, Group D’s top seed and the favourites to progress, the USA carry the hopes of a nation that has poured enormous resources into staging this tournament.
Mauricio Pochettino, the well-travelled Argentine who previously managed Tottenham, PSG and Chelsea, has the job of turning expectation into results.
His squad blends 2022 veterans with a fresh wave of talent, built around Christian Pulisic and a striker in Folarin Balogun who finally gives the Americans a reliable goal threat.
Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie bring Premier League and Serie A muscle to midfield. The catch? The USMNT have won just one World Cup knockout match in its history, and results under Pochettino have swung between encouraging and worrying.
Playing on the West Coast, with roaring crowds in Los Angeles and Seattle behind them, they’re well situated to get out of this group, but after that, who knows what will happen.
Türkiye
Surprisingly, this will be Türkiye’s first appearance at a World Cup since their remarkable third-place finish in 2002.
To mark their return to the world stage, they are bringing two of Europe's most exciting young attackers.
Arda Güler, the 21-year-old Real Madrid playmaker, is the man every opponent fears, blessed with a left foot that can unpick any defence. Alongside him, Juventus forward Kenan Yıldız offers a second spark, while the experienced Hakan Çalhanoğlu pulls the strings from deep.
Coached by Vincenzo Montella, the Crescent-Stars build everything around getting the ball to their gifted youngsters.
The worry is at the back, where an adventurous setup can leave them exposed if opponents strike early.
Paraguay
Also returning to the World Cup after a significant absence (16 years), Alfaro's Paraguay are built on defensive steel.
They conceded just 10 goals across 18 qualifiers, matching Argentina, and famously beat both Argentina and Brazil in Asunción. The flip side is a blunt attack that managed only 14 goals.
Captain Gustavo Gómez anchors the backline, while Miguel Almirón and the unpredictable Julio Enciso carry the creative load.
This is a team designed to frustrate, absorb pressure and punish on the counter. Whether that will be enough to make it to the Round of 32 still remains to be seen.
World Cup Group D Predictions
1st – USA
As much as it pains us to say, we can’t see hosts USA going out at the first hurdle. It’s very rare for host nations to not make it out of their group with Qatar and South Africa being the only ones in recent memory not to progress.
Neither would have qualified for their respective World Cups if they had not been the host nation however, whereas the USA routinely qualify for football’s showpiece event.
With home ground advantage, partisan crowds, the Pulisic-Balogun axis, and Pochettino scribbling on the whiteboard, they are favourites to top Group D for good reason.
2nd – Australia
Favourites to finish last? Beautiful. A team full of young, hungry but ultimately unproven players? Perfect. No one outside of Australia giving us a chance of advancing? Wonderful.
When will these people learn! This is exactly where Australia wants to be! At the last World Cup, we escaped a group much harder than this with nothing more than some geriatric A League players and that famous Aussie spirit.
And if not for some Emi Martinez heroics, we would have dragged eventual champions Argentina to the murky waters of extra time and who knows what would have happened then.
This time around things couldn’t be more different. A young, hungry, in form team, full of players playing in top European leagues, yet the sceptics remain.
Forget the odds, forget the detractors and give into belief. Australia are getting out of the group (we hope).
3rd – Türkiye
The generational talent of Güler and Yıldız certainly gives them a route out of Group D. They carry the firepower to win shoot-outs and the confidence of a side that performs when it matters.
However, Türkiye lack any real defensive steel and time and time again teams have shown it’s easier to block than to blast your way out of a group.
There are a lot of similarities between this side and the Denmark side Australia defeated in the 2022 Group Stages. A lot of hype, a lot of attacking stars, but not much to show for it all in the end.
Türkiye’s lack of experience, particularly at the back, could catch them cold and leave them languishing outside the two automatic qualification places in Group D.
4th – Paraguay
Someone has to bring up the rear in Group D unfortunately and our pick is Paraguay. Take nothing away from the South Americans who were defensively superb in qualifying, we just don’t fancy their chances of breaking sides down and scoring enough goals to really do the required amount of damage to advance.
Alfaro's deep defensive block and the spark of Almirón and Enciso should be enough to keep them competitive, but all in all we are predicting a short stay for the South Americans in the US of A.
